The Dealer needs to make a profit on every sale, understandably (that is how they pay their bills). An ‘04 is going to require they pour money and time into it to make it as “like new” as they can, and since you often only uncover problems as you work your way through the vehicle, they have to assess a higher cost of refurb to have a safety net.

There ain’t many 17 year old vehicles dealers would give 6K for, but if your LJ is as nice as you say, sell it privately and use the proceeds towards your JL down payment.

btw OP: Post some pics! I am sure you would get genuine offers for that Unlimited right here!

Seriously doubt that. They'll put at least a $10k price tag on that LJ without blinking an eye.
I think you are forgetting that dealers have to sell vehicles with warranties. Warranties they are 100% responsible for. Imagine this LJ has a transmission or engine problem within 30 days of sale; a sudden failure just due to wear - no indication it was going to fail before hand. How much do you think that will cost the dealer to repair? How much might it cost them if they refuse to repair it?

A Private seller just says “Man that sucks dude, sorry that happened to YOUR Jeep.” A Dealership that tried that would be skewered online and possibly sued. For a $10K sale, after buying the damn thing for $6K and then pouring whatever into it to sell it (min $500 just for detailing), it ain’t worth it.

Not all dealers have to have a warranty and they do sale older jeeps sometimes. Especially when they can get them.

I bought the '03 as-is and all its needed was one item fixed (cant remember of the top of my head) and that was the OE part that finally gave out after 16 years. Most of the money has been lift, tires, wheels, bumpers and repainting of the whole jeep. from a distant the jeep looks brand new (for 2003)

Keep it they only made 47,000 or so in 3 years 4677 were flame red. Keeping my 06 LJ and ordered a JLURD on 10/14. One with 81,00 miles just sold in my area for 23,000.
Great info . Thanks for posting this . I wonder how many are still on the road .

When was the last time you saw a 17 year old car with well north of 100k miles on a big name dealer lot? Never. Not even with the stupid used car market we’re seeing now.

Op‘s best bet aside from keeping it is a private party sale.
You're right. Nobody cares about a 17-year old car, but even the shittiest LJ, so long as it runs, typically won't sit on any dealership lot for more than a week. Even with the stupid used car market, they remain highly desired.

I think you are forgetting that dealers have to sell vehicles with warranties.
No, they don't.

I glow in the dark!
I have had a 2004 wrangler unlimited since new . 17 plus years , 131.000 Miles , no mechanical problems , just wear items , tires , brakes , and fluid service .
I ordered a new wrangler on
11-5-21 .
Dealer traded in a 2020 cherokee trail hawk for what I paid for it a year ago .
They only want to give 6,000.00 for my 04 unlimited on trade . Looking for input . The offer for the 04 seems low . Don't want to give it away
I'm looking for an LJ. Send me the details and pics.

I never trade a vehicle in because you never get what it is worth I always sell private . Try car max
That's what I can't figure out . The dealer gave me 2,000.00 more than I paid for my cherokee after we drove it for one year , 7,200 miles . Paid 30,000 traded in one year later for 32,000 . Then they try to low-ball the 04 .

Keep your old jeeps!!!! Not sure what options you ordered on the new one. But my 2021 JLU manual has been setting around for over two months waiting on a new clutch master cylinder........Some new replacement parts are very hard to get your hands on......So, you may have to drive your old reliable Jeep in the meantime.

I really don't want to part with it , but I only have so much room to park vehicles . I don't know what it is worth , but I was thinking around 8-10 thousand . It has a new soft top and windows that I bought when new , been moving them around my garage for 17 plus years .
I was told by my dealer the new wrangler won't be in for 6 months . That gives me a lot of time to make best choice , 6000.00 is not enough . If I can't sell it for more than that I will find a place to park it .
Yeah, I was going to say $10k all day. Put it up on facebook marketplace and autotrader, don't give it away to the stealer.

Keep it!!
I traded in an 06 LJR in 2016 for a Ram Power Wagon. They gave me 16.5 for it, but I wish I would have kept it.
