The advice to sell on your own is generally true for “any” older and higher mileage vehicle. Dealers don’t really want a 17 year old vehicle on their lot so they will likely just send it to auction. As a result, they lowball any trade — they would rather not deal with it.

The good thing is I have some time to talk the war department into keeping it . The dealer told me , six months before I see the new one . Practically speaking I know we don't need it . But I'm not going to let a dealer take it from me for that price . I have never owned such a trouble free vehicle . It has been my wife's daily driver for the entire time we have owned it . That is why I'm having a hard time considering selling it .

Got a pic or two of it? I know a guy that’s looking for one and he knows what to expect price-wise. As in, he knows it’ll cost him more than what the dealer is quoting you. Could be a perfect match.

4 cylinder might make it harder to sell, but you could still gain $2k over what the dealer is offering.

Over the course if the years, I've sold every vehicle for thousands mire than the dealer offer. I know you lose a little in sales tax offset, but years ago we figured-out we got my wife's new Acura for free based on the $30k plus we made selling our used ones over dealer offer.

100% agree. Dealer is probably offering about what they’ll get for it. Auction house will likely make a few grand.

Seriously doubt that. They'll put at least a $10k price tag on that LJ without blinking an eye.

I would keep it, and insure it through Hagerty for a classic rate. With Hagerty you can set the amount you want to insure it for. I'm guessing the property tax are low at this point. That little thing has got to be more that 6000 dollars worth of fun. Good luck on your decision.

I really don't like the idea of selling it . My wife has been using it as a daily driver and I know it has never been off road or driven above the speed limit . I'm not letting it go for six , but first 10,000.00 and it's sold .... Next april when new wrangler delivers , I hope . She needs something to drive this winter . I asked her to drive my dually , I just got the look......

When was the last time you saw a 17 year old car with well north of 100k miles on a big name dealer lot? Never. Not even with the stupid used car market we’re seeing now.

Op‘s best bet aside from keeping it is a private party sale.

I have had a 2004 wrangler unlimited since new . 17 plus years , 131.000 Miles , no mechanical problems , just wear items , tires , brakes , and fluid service .
I ordered a new wrangler on
11-5-21 .
Dealer traded in a 2020 cherokee trail hawk for what I paid for it a year ago .
They only want to give 6,000.00 for my 04 unlimited on trade . Looking for input . The offer for the 04 seems low . Don't want to give it away
Keep it they only made 47,000 or so in 3 years 4677 were flame red. Keeping my 06 LJ and ordered a JLURD on 10/14. One with 81,00 miles just sold in my area for 23,000.
