Hello

I have a 2023 Rubicon 4XE

First oil change at 411 miles ? Was told the algorithm used included “time” oil viscosity and something about engine usage … All to say; Why would I need an oil change whilst using the vehicle mostly in EV so it could have had 80 REAL engine use miles ? Although the first three oil changes come with a warranty … I feel I’m going to be spending / waisting good money going forward on my “dime”

Anyone ?

Welcome to the Forum!
I suggest that you follow the recommendations of your owners manual. Most in the Forum, change their engine oil, every 5000 miles, along with a tire rotation. But this is your call.

Thanks…
Although I did not have that option as the 4XE would not work in EV without this maintenance performed @ 400+ miles
(The navigation / computer told us this was required ) ? Just say’n a few hundred miles mostly EV is a little crazy for an oil change

I agree 5000 would be suffice

thanks

My oil change reminder didn't even come on until I had over 9000 miles on my 4xe, probably at least 80% of those were electric.

How long have you owned it? My Chevy Volt worked this way and 95% was electric driving. But about every 18mo it would require an oil change even though I had maybe 1,000mi max of ICE driving.

Had our first 4xe about 18 months before it wanted an oil change, I believe Jeep's recommendation is every 10,000 miles, so it was almost right on. Have 2100 miles on a new Sahara 4xe (we drive it an average of 500 miles per month) so I expect to see the same. New Jeep did switch to FORM for a short time at 1100 miles. I also have a RAV4 Prime that doesn't seem to care about how long oil or gas sits, I think Toyota says if it runs 300 miles per year on ICE it's happy.

The 4xe manual says every 12 months max - the oil life indicator will drop by ~8% every month even if the engine isn’t used. I’m guessing that you hit the end of that 12 month window. Look at your manufacture date as the timer starts then.

i had the same thing happen with my used 2023 4xe. It was built in April 2023 - sold to its first owner in Nov 2023, traded in for a pickup truck in Dec 2023, and we bought it in April 2024 with less than a 1000 miles on the odometer. The oil change reminder went on shortly after that. I elected to change the oil as the cost is low and I could do it my self.

Isn't the first oil change important to get any shavings or impurities out of the engine, as you wouldn't want those floating around?

You need to follow the minimum recommendations set forth by the Oil Life monitor as well as the owner's manual. I believe the OM specifies you change the engine oil at least annually, or the specified mileage interval, whichever occurs first.

Short engine cycles and starts mean incomplete combustion and operating temps that aren't always fully in operating range, accumulation of moisture and other contaminants. This creates junk in the oil and it uses up the oil's detergents, and the oil becomes more acidic over time. All that's to say...just change it annually. At least.

Welcome to owning a hybrid. You get to maintain and deal with the complexity of a propulsion battery system and an ICE all in one vehicle :D

Now that’s a response I understand.

It was right at the 1 yr mark so… that makes sense as well as your comprehensive answer about combustion, detergents, temp etc !

thanks

Check out this post / thread on FORM. https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...jeep-do-to-improve-customer-interface.125970/

The first post has an attachment from Jeep Cares from the factory folks with lots more details on why it’s needed. It goes to the discussion above with respect to the oil degradation with the multiple starts and stops of the engine in hybrid mode. It would also hold for ICE engines that only run for short distances or periods of time.

I'm changing every 5k miles myself because of oil dilution concerns. The one time I used Jeepwave they made a mess.

For a happy Pentastar change it every 5,000 miles with 5 quarts of 5W-30 full synthetic and a new filter
