Just finished up getting the corner armor installed. Went with Aluminum. Definitely not a fun project. Drilling 44 holes through the body had my anxiety through the roof. Tomorrow they go in for paint.

Im on the east coast - so I want to seal the corner armor from allowing dirt and water behind them and potentially down into the the rivnuts. What does everyone recommend to use as a sealant that is removable and wont damage the paint?

Looks nice.

I'm assuming your taking them off to get them painted? If so they make some really good waterproof primers now days. Some will also continue to cure and seal after applied.

Was your plan to paint both sides? I think the right primer/sealer will work better than paint on paint, before install. you may or may not have seal the edges.

Ask your painter, or call some paint shops and see what they recommend.

yeah Ill be taking them off and they will be paint-matched to the body using body paint.

I was thinking of something like puttinh a bead of silicone (like for windows and doors) along the top and sides. Id leave the bottoms open for drainage. Im just not sure what window/door silicone might do the paint long term.

someone else suggested gutter sealer.

I'm a big fan of Next Venture's gear (waiting for my rear diff skid to be finished!), but I'm trying to wrap my brain around damaging your rear quarter panels to protect your rear quarter panels. Won't aluminum just give when you press it against a boulder?

I may or may not have already kissed a tree on the passenger side. ?. luckily it was able to be pulled out pretty good, but it was enough for me to want to put the armor on instead of raisining the body, then the corner armor cant even go on.

east coast wheelin is all about tight trails. why, I have no idea. our rocks are slick as snot as it is. if you wheel anything above a blue rated trail out here, its just a matter of time before you bounce off a tree.

as for the aluminum, its 3/16” thick and will definitely prevent the very thin sheet metal body from caving in. It should hold up well I lean it over into a tree or rock, but a really hard hit may still damage the body. Rock Krawler ran it on their race car and praised it from what I heard.

Besides the anxiety level, what was the difficulty of the install? Any trouble getting everything lined up properly for drilling?

not bad at all. Im a youtube mechanic, so I followed their install video and it went smooth.

There are a few things they dont mention in the video: First- if you live in a area prone to rust, you definitely want to paint the holes you drill out. Second - you start drilling the holes with a 15/64” bit. the rivnuts require either 3/8” or 25/64”. In the video it looks like they go right from 15/64 to 25/64 without stepping up the holes. You’ll definitely walk the bit all over the side of the body if you do that. I basically drilled out the 13 per-side rivnut holes about 4 times, increasing the size if the bit each time. Last - I would recommend you request they send a few spare rivnuts so you can properly set the tool up. Even in their video they do it themselves, but provided not one spare rivnut. Luckily I had a few that came with the tool, but they werent exactly the same size. So I kinda YOLO’d it.

I like GEs best 100 percent silicone calking. They say it will hold up for 50 years. Resistance to mold a mildew etc.

I used it on my gutter on back of the house where the pool was. 20 years later the aluminum gutter was corroded but GEs best was still perfectly in tack, no mold nothing and still water tight.

No, I believe they have changed the name. It now says "supreme" on it.

Of course they don't advertise it for the use you are wanting to use it for. I have just had really good luck with it. After my first use, I continued to use it over the years and it has never let me down.

I'd be afraid to seal it. While you are sealing things out, you're also sealing them in. If the silicone ever leaks (especially from the top) and you get water and muck behind it, it's going to sit in there forever. I'd put a heavy coat of wax or some kind of paint sealer on both the body and the armor panel. Since they are bolted on (assuming the rivnuts are for bolts), take them off every year or so and clean out behind them. Maybe a foam rubber strip around the back edges?

feel like im looking at my jeep! lol. I have the teraflex tire carrier which has a crossbar between the hinges. if you look at my pick from the back, youll see I had to cut that tab above the hinge from the corner armor and then tap a new hole. no way was I remove the whole carrier.
