Stupidly I drove off from a camp spot and left the keys on my roof. Is there any way to start my JL without its key? Thanks!

Spare key is it.

No other option other to have it towed to a dealer for them to get you a new key.

I have my spare key inside a faraday bag. That bag is then zip tied to the battery cables under the hood.

Ooooo good luck! Almost was me once. I’d put my keys, with the fob on it of course, on my driver side tire fender (was loading things in the back). Forgot it was there then drove a few miles away somewhere. Was looking all over for my keys to lock the jeep. Of course it’s dark out. Mentally retraced my steps with them…realized where I’d left them…shockingly—they were still there and hadn’t fallen off! Now im super careful where they go. Hope you recover yours!

I'm a bit surprised that it didn't give an error message when the key "went out of range".
If keyfob out of range message fired, I missed it. I certainly would have known I screwed up then and there, turned around and began looking for it without shutting the engine off of course.

Me too, mine definitely does that, I've gotten a "key not detected in vehicle" (It was in the vehicle, but in a camping gear bag in the back) message while driving my 2023 before. It still lets you continue driving (it doesn't stop the vehicle or anything like that) but it definitely kept nagging me that my key isn't being detected.

Maybe the jeeps without proximity door sensors don't have that capability though

I think this would be a good situation for the "Christmas tree lights"/ "vehicle will soon shut down' messages. More useful than the three beeps when I'm unloading things from my running Jeep.

In what situations would someone want to be driving without the key in the vehicle? I can think of a few, but some are far-fetched, and most would be rare.

I think things that happened to the OP, a rando jumping in a running Jeep to steal it, and maybe even a forgotten or wrong keyvalet situation would be much more common and warrant at least a dash notice/warning.

(But maybe the drain on the battery constantly checking for the fob would be an issue?)

I hope you find your key @Bearach

I'd suggesting walking the road instead of driving it, or at least walking if you don't find them driving.

I once left a Garmin inReach mini on my roof and drove off. I knew where it was within 100 feet or so, but when I drove back I actually missed it, until I got out and looked around on foot.

Good idea. What's your address and where do you typically park your Wrangler? Asking for a friend...

Thanks for everyone's replies. My key was found by some folks I spoke to and gave directions to (not to my camp) that happened to be driving a rented Jeep. Unbelievably, they saw my keys on the road and returned them to me, saving me untold time and trouble. I did have to pay a rental car company a cancelation fee for coming to pick me up, but that was inconsequential. It all worked out much better than I could have expected.
