Hi, TKL223/3. We suggest a dealer visit for this! Use our Dealer Locate Tool to find one to work with:

I’m out of warranty and don’t want to pay $180 for them to diagnose the issue. With all of us having the same problem, I’m curious if there will be a recall on these parts.

Just noticed the same issue on mine where keyfob stopped working. I run a 2018jlur and just went over warranty so If I know the part I need I'll do it myself...or hold out on hope it's a recall like the completely new paint job I'm getting in a month

Forgot to mention it must be a servo failure inside. I can hear it try to engage electronically when you press the fob both open and even more so closed but it doesn't seem to engage anything. Once I take it apart I'll be able to tell I'm sure

Harkster, Did you ever get yours apart? I think this is something I can do myself ( out of warranty) but I can find no tutorials on how to get to the locking device. thanks

I had my automatic lock start to go intermittent about 2 months ago, totally failed a couple weeks ago.

Guys, honestly, this is a super easy fix.

Go to allpar and get PN: 68282968AA. $60.98

Remove the interior tailgate panel. A trim tool helps, but it’s just held on with clips. Pull it straight out, there’s about 12 clips.

Disconnect the two pushrod linkages from the assembly. The smaller door handle rod can be disconnected right from the module, but the heavier lock tumbler rod needs to be disconnected from the cylinder first to get the unit out.

Remove the three torx bolts around the latch

The latch assembly comes right out the access hole.

Unplug the connector, plug it in the new assembly and reverse the process.

This is an honest 10 minute job, and all you need is a torx. The proper torx might even be the same one they give you in the Jeep tool kit. There is no reason to give a dealer $300-ish to have this diagnosed and repaired (not to mention loosing your vehicle for a day).

The old unit (pictured) is white, the new one is black. The unit from allpar came in Mopar packaging and has an identical placard sticker on it. There are third party units on eBay for around $40, but the direct factory replacement is only $60.

Glad I found this thread. Mine has started doing this as well, but I'm sure it's simply worn out from years of use and the fact it's largely made from Chrysler's high-quality plastic.

I have a 2018 JLUR with 45k miles. I stumbled upon this thread. I checked my rear gate and found that mine also was not locking - just sounded like it was! I have ordered the replacement part. This is scary - how many Jeep owners are out there with a non-locking rear gate and not knowing it! I'll post what happens once I receive the part - ordered from MoparPartsOverstock - and it's now $71.00.

Took an extra couple minutes as I have a front runner drop down table, but followed your directions and now the jeep is all good again. Thanks!
