Carefull here... my experience is that it was intermittent. Sometimes it locked, sometimes it did not. I had to turn off the lock proximity feature so that I could manually test the latch each time I left the car. It's not a good feeling when you can't trust it. My advice is to buy the part...
I have a 2018 JLUR with 45k miles. I stumbled upon this thread. I checked my rear gate and found that mine also was not locking - just sounded like it was! I have ordered the replacement part. This is scary - how many Jeep owners are out there with a non-locking rear gate and not knowing it...
Ever get closure on this? I have a JLUR with <1,000 miles (same color, btw). Just previous to the issue, I was on cruise control for 45 mins (not sure if related). Exited the freeway at a traffic signal and the whole Jeep jerked - I thought I got hit from behind. All other symptoms are like what...

I ordered a JLRU Punk'n on Mar 27. It's been in "D" for 40+ days. My dealer tells me one thing and Jeep Cares tells me something completely different. At some point I need to reconsider this whole thing as 2019 models are only a few months out.
Jeep Cares told me that JLs with the premium soft-top have been delayed. My JLUR is a dual top, but still got caught in the lack of product (ordered in mid-March). The Premium SoftTop is slowly becoming more available - so they say.
