When someone wants to talk about how many head gaskets were replaced in the V6, where is the # of 2.0L sold vs # of 3.6 sold in that comparison. That makes a HUGE difference if you have 10X the number of 3.6 vs 2.0.

Both are good motors, both have their issues. I wish the Hurricane was available, but maybe the big refresh in the future will have it.

I have had 3 Pentastars. One had issues with the oil cooler (JK) (replaced 2 under warranty) and it went 140K before it decided to lose coil packs when we ordered our JL. Wheeled the hell out of that JK. I had another go 90K and the upper oil pan leaked like a sieve (warranty) before my daughter's accident when it went up in flames. The other has been going strong for 50K with no issues. I have two friends (Ram Truck and Pacifica) who both blew head gaskets in there Pentastars

I can go through countless Jeep friends who wheel hard with Pentastars and never had issues. I wish I could still get the Diesel TBH.

I personally don't want to use premium all the time to get the "optimum performance" from the 2.0L. I'll stick with my Pentastar.

Just my .02 ... which apparently there's a lot of in 22 pages. lol

CAFE standards, not emissions, has caused all of our vehicles to be gutless wonders. If the government would get the hell out of the way, we could have properly powered vehicles that would still get decent mileage. AND we wouldn’t have stupid expensive gimmicks added on to make our vehicles even more complicated and less reliable.

A very small V8 (like a 318 or even a 273) would walk all over a crappy little 2.0/turbo that has to work twice as hard to do the same job.

Without regard to the chassis its in, that 318 and 273 better not be stock. This coming from a former engine builder/Samtech grad.

Wasn't the 318 pretty damn wimpy? Like 155 HP?

Sign of the “smog” years, the AMC V8 that replaced the Buick V6 in 72 had the same ~160 HP, the low point 75 350 Vette 165 HP, it started slowly creeping up from there. By my son’s 98 Dakota the 318 was 230 HP…. and still running good at 328K mi when the trans failed.
not bad for the times, the 360 had 250 HP

Yet still significantly behind our 3.6. I'm guessing people would be proud to have that V8 though.

I’m suggesting a new modern version without all the gimmicky crap added on, not the original versions from 50 years ago. I hope that clears things up a little. :)

Smog had to be delt with, it took 18 years from 72 for Corvette to achieve the same HP as a 60’s 327. With an engine developed by Lotus and built by Mercury Marine IIRC. I would have to research when the Chevy 350 did, I just might out of curiosity……
The 2001 ZO6 385 HP, 10 better than a 327.

The 350 was an absolute pig when it first came out, but by the end of its run it was very good. I forget how many revisions it went through, but that development really helped with the next generations of V8’s.

Are you taking the change from reporting gross to net horsepower in the early 70s into consideration for those comparisons?

I have edited memory farts. The 350 had a couple-three good 370 HP years before they were castrated.
my buddy that got my Jeep’s L79 short block for it’s pre smog numbers for his gutless smog Chevy PU had to find the performance pre smog heads with front accessory mounts for it and they were only made 2 or 3 years. Uh, his PU’s HP well over doubled and MPG improved by 50% , 8 to 12 MPG

No, I don’t know when or how, but I know it was done. Not attempting to misrepresent.
