It doesnt look like mine. On mine, the pattern was more apparent (the paint was gone showing a very distinct pattern). It doesnt mean yours is not though.

Here's a good video. He stated backlash should be between .005-.008 and torque to turn should be between 28 and 35 in lbs.

yup, pretty sure I hosed the preload at one point, and need a new crush sleeve, could that cause my pattern to be 'lightly' visible?

No, you need to thin the gear paint with a little gear oil before applying and put more drag on the ring gear while spinning the pinion. 6 or 7 times through the paint in each direction. If you went beyond the preload spec at any point you need a new crush sleeve.

so I will need a new crush sleeve AND re-check the pattern haha, crush sleeve is on the way and I will post back later this week if I'm able to get another pattern reading.

Your preload shouldn’t affect your pattern unless it’s just way off.

so even though I need to replace the crush sleeve, I can still re-check the pattern and it could be good?

If you havent already, I would recommend installing an axle shaft shaft and having a friend apply resistance while you turn the pinion. This will provide a clearer pattern.

The pattern looks acceptable based on your wheeling intentions, but could be revised for increased durability. In the first picture (drive side of the gear), the pattern looks a little high and toward the heel.

The pattern can be lowered (toward the root of the tooth) and shifted inward (from the heel to the toe) by:
1) Moving the ring gear into the gear mesh to decrease backlash. However, you are already at the minimum backlash specification so this is not an option for you.
2) Installing a thicker pinion shim to move the pinion into the gear mesh. This will of course require you to re-setup the backlash

Good luck!

Using your hands and a rash on the ring gear is usually sufficient but I agree, the pinion needs to be a little deeper. You don’t usually adjust the pattern by changing backlash.

Agreed, pinion is the main adjustment and backlash can be used as a fine adjustment but needs to be within specification
