Never low on oil. Checked all over, found nothing. You had an oil leak; did you run it low on oil? Sounds mechanical, but if it were me I would try to eliminate any chance of it being something loose. Check all brackets, radiator mountings, etc… to eliminate those things. Obviously take it back to the dealer and let them deal with it since they repaired it last.
Possible...dealer had everything open and replaced all fuel lines and such. No gas, 100% sure, I am the only operator.I had another thought...a bad injector or incorrect injector timing. That will and can cause the knocking sound in diesels. ALSO...fuel contaminated with gasoline...is there any chance you got a bit of gasoline in your diesel? Gas will raise all kinds of hell in a diesel, even in low amounts it will cause pre-detonation under load causing a knock.
Just thinking about your dilemma...
Whew!!! sure sounds metallic from the recordings...but only under load. Very curious to say the least. Sounds kind'a like a rod knock but from my experience a rod knocks all the time (even at idle) to some extent, and they get worse over time...not just from good to bad (like yours) unless in the event of catastrophic failure i.e. throwing the rod through the side of the block.
How about secure the Jeep "VERY WELL" and have someone power brake it and go around and check where it is coming from. May get it on a lift/hoist and someone inside power brake it and inspect it from underneath.
I was a vibration analyst for 30 years and with the right equipment it can be identified precisely...but you need someone with the skill and knowledge to perform those tests.
Unfortunately is does not sound good but you never know until its resolved. Keep us posted. Good luck!
That sounds like rods. When you accelerate under load the torque puts a hard rearward push on the crankshaft. If the thrust bearing on the rear main isn't perfect and the crankshaft moves back it will bind the rods and wrist pins creating a very similar sound. With the oil leak did the engine ever run low on oil? It doesn't take much to damage the thrust bearings in a small high torque diesel engine.Service advisor agrees. Two options exist. New HPFP and system, or a crate engine. Will know more on Wed.
The 3.6 have rocker arm problems. If you can change them out yourself it's not too bad. The heads do not have to come off. Once you get all the crap covering the access to the cam covers things get a little more old-school. If you have to pay a dealer to do the job you are better off trading it in. There are great Youtube videos on the job.I get a similar noise on the 3.6L that I’m also investigating. Looking forward to any updates you have and if I find anything I’ll post here!
