The circuit board and battery in the stock fob is all you need to work with a JL that has proximity.... to start it and drive it. The RFID chip does not come into play with proximity.

With just the RFID Chip, no ....you cannot unlock the JL.

An RFID chip hidden in the JL is best ...... for just in case your fob battery ever went dead in the fob, or the circuit board in the fob died, etc.. (rare event) Anyway....You do not need the RFID chip.... only time you need it is if the fob stops working (battery dead or circuit board dies, etc.) and you have to push the chip against the start button while your foot is on the brake pedal to start the JL.

.
Thanks for the clarification.

The reason I asked my earlier question: thieves are using repeater devices to capture and relay signals from key fobs to unlock doors and drive away the vehicle. I was curious what part of the fob is being targeted in these scenarios. Sounds like it's the circuit board and electronics.

If that's indeed the case, I'm wondering if it's feasible to make a fob that has an on/off switch as a means to defeat these kind of attacks.

Placing the key fob in a faraday cage (metal-lined pouch) should also be effective. But it is far too cumbersome than an on-fob solution.

Just changed my second key/fob (beast) over, and loving this Model M+ just as much as the first one. Nice!

Great product, all in all! :like::like:

@Rhinebeck01 -- Are they going to put the door lock covers into production / available for order? Those look pretty sweet.

I'll volunteer to test drive a set out here in Hawaii if needed... You know, the salt air & pineapple can be rough!!

Cheers,

I received a UPS package of say a dozen, assorted DI Labs door lock covers and another fob, this past Monday....

Different colors, and with the Jeep wave, and more.... Gladiator helmets... tire tread and and.....

Fit on each and every one was spot on. Quality was excellent...
No double sided tape needed with install, but a guy/gal might want to use tape for added security..

Anyway, if you want to get a look go to the DI Labs, THREEDOM, FB page and take a look.

The Badges for JL/JT you see there are also really really slick.. Quite soon DI Labs will be offering all, along with their Model M, M+, S, Model S+ fobs.. Anyway, see all at their FB page.

I ordered a black, smooth with the smallest key head. Not glamorous but it's not a necklace.

@Rhinebeck01 ~

Thanks again! Yes, those on their FB page are pretty spiffy.

I'll try to leave a comment or request to see if they could make any with the various seals of the six armed services on them... Reckon/bet they would probably sell like hotcakes.

Cheers & Aloha Friday,

For those interested.... DI Labs, today started selling their door lock covers... I'll say no more then to the quality, fit and look is exceptional. They are well worth the $ and look great..

Yes, as a tester of the product ..... I received a free, final design set of these with TREAD.. JUST KNOW, if they were not top notch I would not be posting like this..

Back to the fobs; mine just survived the cloths washer. I found it in the pocket of my wranglers. Took it apart and placed the RFID and circuit board in a plastic ziplock with two cups of rice and several dehumidifier packets. The battery looked intact and tested at 3 V but I purchased a new one. After five days I assembled the fob with the new battery. It has been working for two weeks. Probably not a testament to the fob shell but it does demonstrate that the OE shell is not needed to survive the washing machine.

@JackA

It's kinda of a crap shoot with any fob.... stock or aftermarket... some survive a journey through the wash and some/most do not.....

Best bet it seems if you fob goes through the wash..... is to take it out of the wash and do NOT push/depress any buttons on the fob and to keep it way away from the vehicle.

Open up the fob, get the battery out and if you can get the circuit board out of the fob....

....THEN, do as you did and as soon as possible, take the circuit board (not necessary to do the RFID) and place it in a sealed container of dry, white rice and if you have one, even throw in a desiccant pouch or bag in the mix.
