From what I can tell, relay orientation matters. Here is the situation:

While reseating a fuse, I took the K08 relay out and then the o crap moment hit me. I verified few pics on the forum and put it back in, started the Jeep and it did run just fine. However, there are 2 things that happened.

1. I have a nagging feeling that I royally screwed it up
2. My brand new 1 month old NorthStar X2 died the same night - not depleted. Dead. I couldn't charge it beyond 9.6v, took it back to Battery Plus, they tried charging it for 24 hours and couldn't get it beyond 9.6v either. They warrantied it out. Its possible its a bad one from factory, but this is a heck of a coincidence.

I posted for a pic of 4Xe on the 4Xe section of the forum and one of the members shared his pic. The orientation is different than mine. I looked up various pics on this forum and I see most relays including this one is put in every which way.

below is my current picture. note, the number 8474 is pointing to the front of the Jeep, the 2nd pic is from the member that posted the pic, the number 8474 is pointing to the back of the Jeep. Various pics I found that number if pointed both at the front and at the back.

Before I put the new battery in and kill it, anyone knows if the orientation of that relay matters?

Note, some of the other relays are oriented differently as well, but I didn't touch anything else, so not worried about them.

Thoughts?
TIA.

Also, are you sure it can be inserted the other way?

I was looking at the diagrams too from 2018, latest I could find. Its the Run/Start relay is all I can find.

B/W, hunting through my phone, I just found a picture that I took before messing around with anything and I indeed put it in the right way

this is how it was from factory

so, my situation is resolved. However, the question still remains since my setup (4Xe JLUR) and the picture from the other forum member (4Xe sahara) is still different.

Looks like it can only be inserted one way. Print doesn't matter and is just variation from the relay manufacturing:

On any relay that CAN be inserted upside down, the posts are staggered diagonally from each other on the inputs and outputs so that it doesn’t matter. You can’t do it wrong.

@GATORB8

Thank you for the diagram. Just pulled the relay, it can indeed go back in a different orientation since there is no PIN 87A. So essentially, if i put it the "other" way it is switching 85 (starter relay control) and 87 (starter relay output) and 30 (starter relay output) and 86 (ground)

@mwilk012 - Thanks for your inputs. See above.

It's probably lack of knowledge on my part on relays, but those switching should matter right?

Ha, it actually shouldn't.

85 and 86 are the trigger legs. 30 and 87 are the switched legs.

Turn it 180 degrees and they're on the same circuits.

You can just probe it with a multimeter, ground should be 86.

Ha, that explains the various pictures I found where the relays go in every which way. The battery issue was a coincidence after all.

Thanks @GATORB8, much appreciated.

this is strange that you can insert relays in opposite orientation, i also noticed that yours does not appear to have K01 STOP/START & K02 FUEL PUMP like mine which is a 2019

Some relays have a diode in them to shunt the voltage spike that happens when the coil's magnetic field collapses when turned off - polarity matters in that case.
