I'm having a hard time believing the ESS will work with the manual transmission. I'm sure it could be done, but that it would be awkward. Any guesses? My bet is that the manual comes without it. That's a feature I'll be shutting off until AEV or someone comes up with a programmer that disables it.

In manual cars that have ESS the system is triggered by the clutch pedal being released while the transmission is in Neutral. IMO this is better since you'll have much more control than with the automatic as to when it shuts down and fires back up.

However if we use the Compass as a guide, Jeep decided to omit the ESS system on the manual transmission model. So they could certainly do the same thing with the JL.

Since I'm a fuel economy junky I'll use the system most of the time, but I do wish it would retain whatever setting you leave it in, and without yellow warning lights on the dash when it's off.

From the back the soft top looks there is an bit that hangs down over the back widow my guess is you can take the top off leave the windows on or vice versa

It’s already ubiquitous on manuals in Europe, not an issue.

As for hacking it, that’s hoping the new encryption and security measures mentioned by the developer of the OBDII port solution, don’t keep those mods from happening.

Personally I just want the vehicle to remember the last setting.

I kinda would be COOL with that literally.

A Golf Cart / Fiat Joli feel would be great on really sunny days where the top can act as a sun shade, but still have the wide-open feel.

Hacking ESS may be easier than you think. I know on the F150 first someone figured out that if you plug in a trailer light dongle it disables ESS, then they found that you can jumper the switch to permanently disable it, then they figured out how to fool the computer into thinking it had the high power load sub woofer option so it couldn't turn the engine off, and then finally someone discovered that simply unplugging a connection under the dash turned it off without throwing a code.

I'm pretty sure that the JL's ESS will suffer the same fate.

For manuals at least, that Bosch system wouldn't be terrible. Turning the engine back on when the clutch is pressed in is enough control for me to not mind it...I think. Half the time I just sit in gear with the clutch in anyway. I'm still opposed to them, just on principle.

Aside from the noise which is the least of my worries I don't like the idea on an off road vehicle. Running a trail and every time you stop the motor shuts off..... Plus I'd be more concerned how much wear and tear this puts on your engine and starter. Interesting read on this issue at the link below.

Lol, just a joke about the things we take for granted and what we think are MAJOR inconveniences in our lives.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of ESS, but in the history of Wrangler "inconveniences" pushing an extra button is decidedly MINOR.

MAJOR inconveniences might include things like water on the drive side floor every time it rains or so much noise at highway speeds that OSHA would require hearing protection...

Nope, had a 2001, 2.5L for about 8 years. Admittedly I've never owned one older than that, so I'm not up to date on my CJ and YJ inconveniences.

Soft top looks like no zippers and all velcro. Looks a lot saggy in the rear. Curious what the frame of it looks like. From the side there appears to be another cross support under the canopy behind the C pillar.

Yeah, we know, it’s in one of our dedicated ESS threads, so not really easier than I think, and definitely not easier than BMW’s option to simply remember last setting.

You can also hack the Cherokee by removing the hood closure sensor.

But the significant point is why do I need to splice a single wire to do something that can be done in software and other mfrs are offering?
