Didn't realize till I got my new 2024 Rubicon home that it didn't have the Nav icon installed . Of course it has Apple car play but I was surprised navigation was not also loaded up. I think it would be nice to have. I contacted my salesman and he gave me some song and dance how it's install at factory and would cost a couple thousand dollars for upgrade. One would think it would just be a software download ? The Jeep has a giant info center, there not going to replace it. Seems like they should be able to plug in and install the program.. Has anyone delt with this before ?

While it may be a simple software install, they will still charge you for it. Many mass produced electronics come pre loaded with other features that are simply locked behind a pay wall. A prime example is when I worked for a Cessna dealer. The base model navigation system did not come with synthetic vision active. It was fully capable and software pre-installed, but if you didn’t pay the $20,000 for the option, it wasn’t activated. It’s cheaper to make electronics physically the same at the factory, and just unlock features as options are paid for.

I believe Ford’s Sync was/ is the same way. They all come with nav, but if you didn’t pay the $1500 or whatever the option cost, it was left inactive.

Even if Jeep wants an arm and a leg for navigation, I believe the salesman is full of shit. It shouldn’t take a team of factory engineers to activate the navigation functionality on a vehicle.

Ask either your parts or service managers.

Good luck.

Agreed.

With Cessna (….and Textron is massively different than FCA), if you wanted the option post factory it was a simple pay to play. Pay the man a lot of money, and they mail your mechanic an activation code stored on a SD card that slipped into the unit. I would think there is a programming port on the back of the unit that could just as easily take a FCA supplied code/ command from a dealer programmer.

There seems to be a tiny number of people here that use the built-in Nav. It's pretty damn bad IMHO and requires $$$ to get updated maps.

Consider using Android Auto or CarPlay instead. Either is significantly better and gets updated quickly / dynamically for free.

It's not on the same level as google/apple offerings but it still does the job, mostly.
I keep mine updated for a secondary just in case, which I actually used in July going from SE VA to NW TN when my apple maps took a turd at a stop that had me all turned around.
The factory GPS got me back to the road ezpz.
Other than backup though the use is pretty meh.

I hate CarPlay. I’m one of the few that would rather use the built in nav. Phone gets pretty hot if going over an hour. It also won’t let me play music from flash drive when phone is plugged in.

My issue with the built in Nav is it is way out of date. They don’t ship Jeeps or update them before you buy them at the dealer. I have a 22 and it still has all the old exits in New England. These are changes that were from 3 and 5 years ago for i90 and routes/roads in Maine have been changed. It doesn’t even say old exit 4 etc. Just all the old routes. Is dangerous, some places have changed to one ways or no outlets and the Nav has no issue directing you into areas that are no longer there or completely changed. Then there’s no way to Nav out since it’s all really old. So I have to use Google maps to get out of there.

So essentially I’m running a map pack from 2018/2019 and am expected to have to pay to update it when I bought my vehicle a few months ago. Is insane

I’ve never had a new vehicle that you had to pay for the most UTD maps when you purchased it.

It was standard on my 22 JLUR with Uconnect 4. They must have made a change with Uconnect 5. IMHO the Nav in Uconnect 4 kind of sucks so unless they did a serious upgrade with Uconnect 5 it wouldn't be worth the $$. I use Waze or Google for street driving and GAIA offroad

Every vehicle I have had with integrated Nav has charged for updates (Honda, Subaru, BMW, Mazda, Toyota)

I knew this was going to be an issue for someone and looks like the OP got bit.

For MY ‘24, you get the Uconnect 5 standard. BUT if you want the built-in navigation you have to add the technology package and get the Uconnect 5 Nav at $2300.00.

With apps that have downloaded base maps. I use Gaia for trail riding. I have my desired base maps downloaded, and it works great outside of cell service.

Just received my new Amp research running boards for 24 JL.. I assume the electrical hook up is the same as 23 models ? Same plug in location behind glove box ?

Just checked. 6/2020 is what’s on mine for the software date. They’re supposed to be sold with the most UTD version installed
