As someone who wheels solo all the time, the big argument from the "never wheel alone" camp is solved by this tech. Even if I have a medical emergency, the Jeep can drive me to the hospital/morgue/ etc. Seems like the only time I'd ever turn on self driving when off road.

I imagine something like this would be for when you've been walking the trail and want to summon your vehicle to you. Or maybe content creators that want to man the camera while the vehicle keeps going.

It's not gonna appeal to anyone that actually wants to drive the trails.

Also right before that the tester is outside watching the Jeep drive itself over some rocks. Is that the idea? You get out while the Jeep does all the fun stuff and then you get back in? ?
Yeah, it's like a giant remote control car at that point. A $65,000 remote control car...

I recognize a couple of those trails, Backwards Bill and Sevenmile. Those are easy trails, though Wipeout Hill is a significant obstacle between them. Looks like they are early on in this tech, it'll be a while before we see a stock Grand Cherokee on Pritchett Canyon all by itself. I, for one, welcome my new computer overlords.
You will NEVER see a stock Grand Cherokee on Pritchett... never ever never.

Jeep: You there? You OK.
You: Grunt moan ouch.
Jeep: I'll get you to the hospital.

Jeep: You there? You OK?
You: Silence.
Jeep: To the morgue it is!

If you dont even need to do obstacles yourself I'd be more inclined to move on from the Jeep and go to the next level. Human rideable drone hovercraft. Go right over that obstacle. ?ā€ā™‚

It is kinda cool.

But do I want it in my Jeep?

Not so much.

I can see a potential use case for something like this in a commercial or even military setting. Allow vehicles with low to no skill drivers quickly go between roadless waypoints.

No, it's awesome really. Not for what they are showing here but this is amazing for rescue operations, military applications and things like that. Lots of potential.
You’re out rock crawling, you get out to have lunch, take a short side hike, you fall and break an ankle, can’t drive.

jeep goes ahead and gets you outta there.

Next step:
Your Jeep autonomously drives itself to the mall, shows off it's 6" body lift, and gets laid. Meanwhile, you stayed home playing Dirt Rally 2 on the console.

From a military perspective, that’s what driver training is for. Besides, the AI can’t take into account the tactical situation adequately.

This will be fine and dandy until that autonomous AI decides the edge of a road is not really an edge of the road and sends the Jeep along with its contents of selfie taking idiots off the side of a cliff ?

I'm all for AI assistance related tech and this stuff seems to be an interesting option for commercial and military purposes, but in a Jeep? Will be fun to watch the types of complaints pile up when this tech inevitably does a "Jeep thing" for some people ?
