When I was driving to Moab the Jeep in front of me had an engine cover and mine didn't and he ran outta gas before me!

Preposterous.
Wait maybe it was the different gearing. Or the different size tires.
Naw that can't be it..

Got it— the added weight of the plastic cover lowered the forward approach angle creating turbulence in the induction system thereby reducing the velocity of the incoming air and simultaneously reducing power and efficiency resulting in more throttle application required for the same forward momentum. Do the math. ?

I think it depends on the color of the Jeep, primary colors get better MPG. Orange, black, and white Jeep owners usually suffer from poor MPG. Sarge, more data needed.
