36K miles and regular oil changes, could anyone tell me if this is normal or is this the dreaded tick? Dealer had it close to the end of warranty and said it was fine but I don’t really trust them. The video makes it sound a little louder than it is and the drivers side is about the same but can’t really hear it on the video

Sounds more like a bearing in one of the pulleys, but I'm far from an expert.

Define normal. JK...

TL/DR... Don't ignore the tick. Take it in and get it checked out.

Let me guess, you have a 3.6? If so, then it sounds like the lifter/follower(rocker arm)/cam issue; there are several threads about this recently. You should bring it in and have it checked out.

I have a '21JLUR. A year ago I had the same tick. Mine started somewhere between 15-20k miles. I didn't think anything of it. Last March I was in Moab at 26k miles. I started losing power on prolonged inclines. The next day I got a CEL, DTC code P000A, “Intake “”A” Camshaft Position Slow Response Bank 1.” .

I ended up having to take it to the Jeep dealer in Grand Junction 2 hours away. Luckily they were able to squeeze me in. I had failed followers, and worn lifters, and one worn camshaft. They replaced all of the above, which resolved my issue. My Jeep has been running fine ever since, but the tick is back; I am now at 42k miles. I have an appointment to get it checked out on the 17th.

Ya I'll take it to a shop Monday. If it went bad this early how can they guarantee it wont happen again in another 40K miles

Not normal. Mine started to sound like that, every time it came close to the oil change time. Many here had the same issue, and it was related to the 0w-20 oil we are supposed to use being too thin, and then cam/rocker/lifter damage happening. I switched to 5w-30 synth oil, and it has purred like a kitten ever since.

Hmmmm.. maybe I’ll try thicker oil before I take it in. Everyone around me has said “we don’t do engine rebuilds” lol like I’m not asking for a rebuild I just want you to check my cams. Anyways. I’ll throw some 5W30 or 20 in and see if that helps

I noticed even a slightly thicker oil quieted up my 3.6. Next oil change I'm going to 5w30.

I had the ol Isuzu Rodeo for like 200K miles and thicker oil helped the tick. I swear that thing would outlive me

They can't. It's a bad design that does not seem to have a rhyme or reason for the failures as they are not consistent to time or mileage.

I upped my viscosity to xW-30 early in my JL's life to help prevent what you are hearing in yours (not that higher viscosity is an absolute cure). I have a friend in TX with one and has run 0W-40 in his from the first oil change. 130K miles later and he has had no issues whatsoever.

Stay on the dealer--you likely have a lifter/follower failing or your cam is scoring or both. Once repaired, then up your oil viscosity to xW-30.

Sounds normal to me. Mine and my wife's both have sounded like that since new.

That sounds fine, but phone audio is very bad for this sort of thing.

Ya the phone audio makes it sound worse than it is. I used a mechanics stethoscope and could hear it more clearly but it didn’t sound awful. Oh well, I found a shop that’s gonna look at it Monday so I’ll let you know what they say
