So during our February thaw last night, I was out taking a closer look at my new (to me) '21 JLU when I happened to notice this black coating on the bottom of the inside of the tailgate:

So, I started looking a little closer, and I noticed this on both sides:

Feels kinda like bed liner. So I looked at the right rear corner, just above the bumper and compared what I saw with my wife's '20 Mojito!

None on hers, which makes me think the PO of my '21 had something sprayed on the bottom to protect the lower parts of the body? Or do others have this same coating?

Not factory. Looks like prior owner applied truck bed coating to what he/she thought was exposed. Probably won’t hurt or help much…. It’s interesting what people chose to do to their Jeeps….

At the least who ever applied the coating did a decent and neat job
I agree, they did. And actually I'm okay with it (and kinda glad) with all the rock salt they use on the roads around here.

Maybe a spray on undercoating ? Not a bad thing to have. Are frame rails covered as well?

I agree. Not sure how far they went, if at all, under the body. I'll take a look for that later.

Not factory. They have probably owned a Jeep or two in the rust belt. This is exactly where my 2010 JKU started to get some paint bubbling from the road salt in Michigan.

Might help, might not. I have seen it a few times, though, and it looks to be well done.

Honestly, anything other than something like fluid film is not the best for rust protection. If it chips or cracks, water can get between it and the paint and actually accelerate corrosion. Rubberized coatings are notorious for this.

Hopefully they didn't do anything similar to the frame.

While almost anything can oxidize, the tailgates are a magnesium alloy (IIRC) with an aluminum outer skin, so its not going to protect it from rusting out like steel.
Maybe it got scratched and this was to cover up the scratches?

Might actually be helpful for grip when taking the doors off. Plus added protection when setting it down. Clearly they took their time though. I sprayed bedliner in my old jeep and there was alot of overspray.
