Should there be a plug or something in this hole? Seems odd it is open to the carpet below

@Woodynj Justin. I oval grommet is designed to go in there. Specifically, some people--I'm not one of them-choose to cut the carpet out below that hole, where you will find the carpet precut, to then break through to the undercarriage and literally visualize the road below.

Said grommet is meant, if you do such cutting, to seal the rig from the outside world made by this hole, and still allow you to drain water in the mat, to the ground below.

There are some good threads on the forum about this. I think FCA made the grommets, then made a new version (of the grommets and/or mats, it's in the video below) to fix the old grommet's leak problems, that didn't solve the problems, but the video below did. I think the aftermarket may make them too.

Brandon's video below features a rig where such cutting the carpet and below to visualize the road was done.

The carpet in my JLUR for the hole was in place but it had a few cuts already there to make it easy to get it out and put the plug in.

So I am missing the plot for the hole? I had seen videos about the Matt’s not sealing the hole good but seems like they should be closed unless you are going to drain them out the bottom.

You use the plug from the hole in the floor pan in the mat.

If you pull out the mat, there will be some cutouts in the carpet. You may (will) have to cut the remaining threads to remove the carpet piece. But under that is a rubber plug pull that out and reinstall the mat. Once the mat is in place take the plug you pulled out of the body and insert into the hole in the mat. Your all weather mats are now installed and sealed properly. If you need to rinse off your mats remove the plug to allow your mats to drain to the outside.

I agree. In other words don't cut the carpet, and don't push through to the ground below unless you are really going to see yourself needing to drain water from the floor mats. I think you should buy the grommets from MOPAR if you don't like the look shown in the first picture and not invite the trouble seen in the video I attached.
