I think GM was the first to do this with eAssist. They've got it in a few models. Nobody really seems to care about it though.
GM was first to the MIldHybrid party here, and Ford also has had a bunch of MicroHybrid+ options in the EU & export markets primarily for small & commercial vehicles. (plus whatever you want to think of both of their other Hybrid platforms).

I think part of the reason for lack of interest in GM’s eAssist is that it’s very weak @ 13HP/44lbft it’s just 60% almost half the power of the 2.0T’s eTorque @ 72lbft, and less than half the power of the 3.6/PUG’s 91lbft, and again 1/3 of the Hemi 5.7L’s 132lbft, all for a 5.3L V8 in a heavy pickup. I wonder if people even noticed the ‘assist’ for either power or efficiency.

44lbft wasn’t about to move the needle much when it represents about 11% of the torque that would be provided by the engine it’s trying to boost, with the PUG and Hemi, they represent about 33% of the torque they are trying to boost, and should be much more impactful than eAssist.

I just saw an interview where they said the 3.6L will get 90 torque boost until engine torque takes over, probably around 1000rpm and it'll get 10% in fuel economy increase. That'd put the 2-door Wrangler manual around 20/25 which is still poor of course. But, mo-betta-fasta always good :D

Here's an update on the latest dates we have. The 2019MY production launch date remains the same as in the first post but now we have some ORDER START dates:

2018 JL order cut-off: 7/19/2018
2018 JL production end: 10/27/2018

2019 JL order banks open: 9/13/2018
2019 JL Production launch: 10/29/2018
Oh man, I don't think I can wait that long for a 2019 JL. Do we know any other new things coming in MY2019 besides possibly an eTorque engine?

Nobody knows what the other changes will be yet. Likely more standard equipment/pricing changes. Maybe a 2-door Sahara, maybe a special edition.

The Turbo 2.0L already has eTorque in the 2018 JL.

Supposedly the rumour is the 3.6L will be getting it in 2019 MY.
Check this video out on the etorque system.

We’ll have to wait and see. With the extra 91lbft of torque from take-off the BSG could change some of the Pentastar’s performance profile significantly, and will definitel impact the easy EPA test numbers for the city. I won’t comment on perceptions of the current PUG, we’ve been there and done that.

I suspect that the 2.0 would’ve been the base engine without eTorque’s presence, and it would’ve been much slower off the line. And the current price positioning allows them to work through development and introduction of the 2.0T while the PUG still takes the brunt of the orders while 2.0T capacity is built.

I expect to pay more for the PUG+BSG, and I suspect it will put the 2.0L as the base engine price wise (regardless of performance) once it arrives, unless someone thinks we can pay $999 or less for all the eTorque components.

* edited to correct the BSG torque number, in my haste put the 72lbft of the 2.0T not the 91lbft of the PUG.
more info on the 2.0 l etorque system.

He did fail to mention the 3.6L getting the eTorque system. But info changes.

What’s most interesting to me is:

How will this affect acceleration off the line and responsiveness from cruising with MDS engaged and flooring it.

And, will there be a noticeable slow down with brake regen like in a Tesla.

They’re claiming about 10% mpg improvement and a few extra HP because they’re reducing engine load from other components. So it should be a hair quicker and an extra 2 mpg in mixed driving.

If they can get the, “feel” of it correct, it’ll be a good system.

This brings up a second concern about why they had the 48 volt system but no electric turbocharger. That’s how euros are doing it now to get big mpg and power without the turbo lag. I guess costs. But a 3.6L with a huge turbo would probably be making 400+ hp and torque.

Great find, and ~5:45 explains one reason why there are two hood sensors!
Seems like an oversimplification though as disabling one or the other has different results as seen in the ESS thread. More likely it’s not just a backup, but that systems look at Sensor A condition, or Sensor B condition, or both Sensor A + B status when actioning items, and likely the A+B depend on the level of assurance required for the action (like hood open remote starting to avoid injury when someone working on the engine, etc).

As already mentioned the 3.6L will get the BSG, just not at launch. It is still unknown if the EcoDiesel will get one, although the Hemi in the Ram is confirmed, but not the ED as of yet from anything I’ve seen, just ESS for the ED.

Plus, the quoted 130lbft at take-off is for the Hemi, not the 2.0T or 3.6L which are 72lbft and 91lbft respectively.

Also, the anti-freeze does play a role in warming or cooling, it’s just that the Peltier coolers enhance that cooling adding a differential beyond the temperature of the coolant in the direction of the applied voltage for cooling or heating, but that coolant is the basis for the +/- degrees of colling heating. Similar to their use in electronics they are most effective when the ambient or coolant is closer to the target temperature rather than the temperature your trying to modify. Thus for some cooling or heating the coolant or ambient air might be better, so there may be two options to take advantage of the better choice for cooling/heating.

BTW, the reason it’s a BSG and not just an MGU is because it also takes care of re-starting duties (S-tarter portion) and is (B-elt driven), an MGU doesn’t necessarily re-start a combustion engine, it may be pure electric, and obviously there are other micro/mild/etc hybrids that do not use belts and are instead intergrated at the wheel or in the transmission for examples.
