I’ve spent over x hours trying to understand this IBS (intelligent batter system). Near full tank of gas. Over 3 days of waiting for the system to “calibrate”…

Tell me the address of the engineer who allowed this monstrosity!

Unplug. Wait. Connect.
Disconnect battery wait connect
Wait over night
Drive 200 miles
8 engine cycles with 1 hour gap….

It should never be this complicated to change an old 12v battery. Now I’m reading that you can only charge on the side of the IBS. Don’t connect to the battery post….

If you have an aux battery, and didn't replace or delete it, your new main battery will be dead within a week. Once you read some threads here about how to take it out of the charging system loop, your troubles will end. Read all of the aux battery delete threads here.

The latest STAR memo on the IBS is here.

With a new start battery installation the IBS needs to be reset, which the memo says to do by disconnecting the communication plug, but it doesn't say how long to do so.

The memo says that after the reset, with the new start battery installed, the engine needs to be started, shut down, and then the JL left alone for 2-4 hours in "quiescent/sleep time" to learn the new battery's SOC (state of charge).

The STAR memo is not explicit on some details. To be sure of things, after removing the old battery you could leave the IBS communication plug disconnected overnight. Install the new battery the next day, making sure it is at full charge before installation.

Then, as stated in the memo, start then stop the engine, and for the following 2-4 hours, remove the negative (ground) cable from the IBS. Finally, as also stated, "3 to 5 drive cycles with an 8-hour key off period will improve calibration accuracy . . . for proper operation."

A little tedious, but not difficult to do.

much appreciated. I’ve been getting conflicting information on various steps. I ordered a new Mopar IBS. I probably killed the Amazon IBS by now.

I’ll follow your tips and the factor bulletin for my next series attempt. Just trying to cover all bases before I try a dealership.

thanks again

Is this for replacing the main 12v in an etorque? Or is this for charging a dead 12v main? Or either? I changed my main 12v about 18mo now I think and didn't have any issues. Just swapped out dead 12v for new one. 3.6 etorque.

I hope this isn't a possible issue for just replacing your 12v main battery. If so this is ridiculous.

So could you put another 12v source on the system as you swap batteries and avoid this possible issue above? Like one of those you plug into your cigarette lighter socket outlet to keep all the memories intact.

would like to see you answer the question from @THAW; what's the problem you're having?

did you read the IBS Reset thread?
you might find some of the info there helpful.

Per the bulletin @Mguy linked

“For most IBS returns, the IBS engineering team and supplier find no issue with the returned parts.”

and

“The IBS should only be replaced if a DTC for the IBS is active.”

I include myself in this. I think the lack of understanding about modern charging systems and the obsession with battery talk on this forum causes a lot of unfounded handwringing.

The IBS should be completely ignored. Act like it doesn't exist.
If you ignore IBS you could end up shitting on yourself.

In general context of Jeeps, that could also happen by over thinking something as simple as replacing the battery.
