There are mucho messages on here describing the Ecodisel as a ticking time bomb. Out of curiousity, what are the likely failure items, and what might they cost us to repair? The stray comments posted in this forum seem to be designed to create FUD. I'm interested in a realistic risk assessment.

The desireability of the Ecodiesels will likely grow now that they are discontinued and many of us are in for the long haul.

Why do we want to keep them? Show me another Wrangler that can do this with so little drama (392 included):

Frankly, even the most likely failures aren't very likely. Tens (hundreds?) of thousands of Ecodiesels on the road (trucks and Jeeps, worldwide), and a few threads here and there.

From my own experience, every so often (but far less than any other car I've ever owned) I get a warning light on the dash. But, when I pull into a service station and spend $70 on some go juice, the light goes away. That's my only problem.

For what its worth, the 4xe can do more with less drama. But I'd never buy a 4xe because of all the horror stories. So the diesel has its advantages.

Your point about it moving things right along with little drama is definitely valid.

You will never get a realistic risk assessment because only Stellantis has that data, and they are not gonna share it. So the only risk assessments you will get on forums are antidotes from complainers. My gut feeling is that most diesel owners have had no significant issues, and thus they don't bitch. Nor do they post, "Hey, I have no significant issues!"

I have no desire to get rid of my diesel, and I plan on seeing if I can make it to the million-mile club. It is the perfect Jeep for me.

It should be noted that diesel fuel is less flammable or explosive when the fuel tank is penetrated by armor-piercing incendiary tracer rounds, which is why traditional combat vehicles use diesel fuel. So that might be a legitimate future consideration with how things are going.

Stellantis SUCKS
The ecodiesel is a pretty solid engine, and has far fewer issues than this forum would have us believe. Generally the folks making claims of diesels being "ticking timebombs" are from those that don't even own one.

Now the rest of the jeep is what should be concerning regardless of engine....mainly in terms of the electrical system, aux/main battery issues, sensors going haywire, paint issues, etc.

If properly maintained I could see the ecodiesel engines potentially out living its gasser peers.

I had the fuel injection pump go south this year, I was at 41k miles so was within warranty, admittedly its technically a different manufacture "Bosch". I wouldn't trade my Diesel Willys in on anything else, I tow an extreme offroad trailer (Moby-1) and this animal has gotten us through some of the roughest situations, slow and easy is the motto. I have owned 7 Jeeps and this one has plenty of torque on tap, not something I would have bragged about before.

No cost during the warranty period. Ticking time bomb? I laugh. Risk wise, no worries, it has a 5-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Wether the ecodiesel desirability grows or wanes is of no consequence to me. Being an early sampler of the 4xe and current owner of the ecodiesel, I can firmly state "this diesel powered Wrangler is the way to go". I've had 304 v8s, 258 i6s, 3.6 v6s and the 4xe which has batteries and 2.0 turbo.

The 4xe is an awesome achievement from FCA but does not suit my outdoor parking desires. We regularly see minus F temps in the winter months. I was pleasantly surprised at the performance and dollar friendly fuel requirements. Prior to the petroleum price increases, my average fuel cost per mile was 11 cents and electric-only came in at 8 cents. We are blessed with affordable electric rates. I recommend the 4xe to those who live in warmer climates and have short drives that will optimize the electric aspect, for northern States not so much.

I took delivery of the 3.0 in July of this year so consider that as post petroleum price increases. At the 3,000 mile mark the average fuel usage of this diesel is 18.6 cents per mile. Lowest gallon price paid was $4.70 and the highest of $5.59 came at the first filling, most recent was $5.37. Been a roller coaster in Michigan for fuel prices over the past 4 months.

That wasn't exactly a tough pull. I don't think any of the current lineup would have much trouble with the tug
The key point was “drama free”, but even with wild gesticulations the others would be challenged. In a situation like this, massive torque, at super low rpms, is a huge asset. I love the way it just chugs up the hill. It’s a beast. :)

I come here quite a lot. I don't own the diesel so I have no first hand experience. What I do see is very few people complaining about them. Most say they love them. Plus you have the advantage of the engines having been used in different platforms before it was put in the jeep.

Agree also with what a few others have stated. Be careful coming on here. Forums are used for a lot of reasons, but a lot of people come here just to complain about something wrong with their jeep. Which is ok, but some go a little overboard and might lead you to believe all JLs are junk which is simply not true.

Many, many are enjoying their JLs daily and have been for years now.

I say if you like the diesel go for it. It was a little out of my price range.

Their grievances will be heard!!!!
At this rate, I'm going to end up terrified to go into my garage, much less start my JL. The overhead framulator might get shorted out by the ignominator in the push button startifier and get inner sanctumized so severely that it sprays kooleraidarater fluid on the steering brake tabulator and the whole place could go up in flames that only purple reign can extinguish.

Oh for crying out loud, is this another common JL problems thread?
Quite the opposite. Only interested in determining the truth from the fake news on the diesel exclusively. I believe that it’s the only thread of its kind.
