I have a 3.6 and it’s not a daily driver. In 7 months I’ve done only a little over 4K miles.

I drive it pretty much weekends only.

What do people think about changing the oil based on time? 6 months?

Thanks.

Have you changed it at all in the 7 months/4k... If not do it now.... then every 4K or 6 months. Is the battery dead?

My Jeeping Buddy is like you and his is 2 years old and 2k milage.

Thanks. I’m going to have it changed in the next couple of weeks. I was planning around the 5k mark but I don’t think I should wait that long. It also sat on the lot for several months before I bought it.

I’m concerned about the aux battery so I try to take it out on weekends even if I don’t have to be somewhere but I definitely miss weekends sometimes. Also it’s in a parking garage so a trickle charger isn’t an option.

First oil change is kind of important.

Once a year or when the Jeep computer tells you, whichever comes first.

Page 209 - Do NOT exceed 10,000mi or 1 year or 350hrs engine run time. If you are hauling or off-roading frequently, change at 4,000mi.

The 3.6L runs on full synthetic and they have higher operating life than conventional or synthetic blends. You can go 7,000mi in a year and be fine, especially given Jeep says don't run past 10,000mi. There's a lot of random wisdom out there saying twice a year/every 3,000mi or so/etc... all different. Listen to what the manufacturer says. Anything sooner than that you're wasting money and creating waste. Given you hardly use yours, you can wait until you hit around a year mark or when your Jeep says so. The manual also doesn't state anything about when to do a first oil change, just keep to the recommendation.

First one on a new car I always do 500 miles. Good idea to change the diff oil then too. After that I go about 7,000 miles between changes using a top tier oil like Amsoil. On the Jeep my oil gauge gets to about 25% at the 7k mile mark.

My Trans Am I do once a year but I never drive it.

Avar928 is correct. Anything more often than the manufacturer's recommendations is a complete waste of time and money. It won't hurt to change it more often, but it won't result in any substantial engine life or performance gains. Just always use a high quality full synthetic oil and filter.

Go ahead and do the first oil change if you have not already. After that, 1 year intervals per the manual if you are not hitting the mileage / computer prompt.

Thanks all. I’ve only had it for 7 months but it sat on the lot for 8 months or so before that, so it’s been over a year. I will have it done tomorrow.

I have had my jeep 1 year and 10 days. Just turned to 7010 miles today and the message to change the oil came on today. I have the same engine in a durango and my wife ran up 20k miles in less than a year.
