I like to reserve the ability to roll around midsummer with the top and doors off and backseat in for trips to the beach and light wheeling with friends, but 99.9% of the time the seat is in my garage and the Jeep is constantly full of camera gear or camping gear.

I used to play the melody of nearly 'always out' but a recent event changed my tune.

On one of the rare occasions that I needed to haul some people cargo around, after installation and use the seat became 'stuck' down, i.e. it would no longer roll forward. While down, the top (back) could fold back and lock into the normal seat position such that someone could then sit in it. However, when the back was unlatched and folded forward the whole unit could no longer be rolled up in the 'out of the way' position (the last poll option). The whole thing just became completely stuck. I could no longer either roll it forward or even remove it altogether.

Of course this happened at 36050 miles, just past the factory warranty. After trying (my best) to puzzle out how to unstick this thing, I reluctantly caved in and took it to the dealership. They quoted me $1028 for the rear seat repair. Yes, over one grand.

After speaking to the technician, he explained that a couple of the internal cables within the seat itself had loosened and would no longer allow the rear latching mechanism to release. He told me I had done nothing wrong and this happens fairly frequently. I asked him if removing the seat and man-handling it any way could have contributed to the internal cabling issue. His overall assessment was that there was no damage to anything, other than some slippage of cable tensioning. In other words, the estimate was entirely labor. Nothing needed to be replaced.

Luckily, I did invest in a Mopar Extended Warranty and I only had to pay it's deductable.

Unfortunately on a side-note, while my vehicle was being repaired, a third-party deliver truck collided with my Jeep within the dealership lot. So not only did I need to have my rear seat fixed, I also now needed a new rear driver's side quarter panel and a new rear bumper.

Of course the stealership weaseled out of all culpability claiming the driver was not their employee and he struck my vehicle in a public parking zone on their lot. Of course I threw the BS flag, they obviously parked it alongside a service bay door where it was an easy target for any incompetent low-wage parts delivery runner in a hurry. Not in a parking zone where a delivery truck would never have ventured. Regardless, I would have to get relief from my own insurance policy and an attorney for any loss of value. Arghh!!!

So my rear seat now stays firmly attached (all the time) but just rolled forward to be out of the way. It clearly seems to be way more happier where it wants to naturally be; inside its Jeep. Obviously it has karma or certainly some bad juju on my financial well-being when it's not in its happy place.

It now stays in the Jeep all the time. It's just way too damn fragile to be anywhere else.

Mine is in and folded up. I commute by myself, but occasionally have to take my daughter and friends to the mall or wherever, so I need the seat to be accessible just in case.

Can also fit a lot more groceries with the seat up and out of the way LOL.

Now to get back to topic, I also had the same issue that Jay reported on the wires loosening and not being able to take flip the seat and/or take it out altogether,. Mine actually fixed itself when I pounded on the bench with a soft hammer. I still use it for winter and just flip it when needed for groceries etc but I keep it out of the jeep in summer because I usually never have more than one passager and I can easily fit the big turtles in the back when I get one of those to drive somewhere and I usualy don't know the sizes until I see them so if the bench would lock it would be an issue so I leave it out for summer.

Mine is always in and always covered with a waterproof cover for the dog. There's also a runner and a leash hanging from between the roll bars.
I'd rather just leave it in there ready to go for her at a moments notice.
I don't move a lot of large things too often that require it moved, but when I need to I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

And no, she's not a front seat pup. When she sleeps she takes up too much room and I need to be able to shift.

Mines been tipped forward for a while. Will go into the seating position soon so I have room for the windows & 1/2 door uppers to go behind the front seats. It’s always in either way

I actually put mine back in about 3 months ago. It's only my wife and I, so our groceries fit behind the seat without it even rolled forward! I also find it easier to put things like my water bottle and laptop bag behind me without them rolling/flopping about. We carpool to work so I can't always put it in the passenger seat.
Blasphemy, I know. But I got space back in my garage too.

My daughter loves to ride in dad's jeep, so I keep the seat in. ☺

I voted always in, tipped forward as that is the default position I keep it in when it's just me. That being said, I do have teenage kids that ride in the Jeep regularly. Often enough that it would be too much of a hassle to just remove it and then have to install it again when they do.

I have a family of four, so the rear seat stays in. Maybe I'll take it out after my younger one goes onto college next year.

Took the rear seats out two years ago. Only put them back in for a visit by two young granddaughters and when they left, the seats came back out. I need the cargo room much more than the seats.
