Make sure you check the drum or fairlead/rollers for possible steel rope marks if any (usually more present on older well worn drums) and damage from the steel cable just to make sure you don't have any burrs/edges that could cut your new rope when its rubbing on the drum or sides of the drum...

Get yourself a good « Lead » or at the very least « copper » heavy weight mallet. The softer material will help prevent dents into the steel as you hit it and the mallet will take the hit instead. Its all about « mass » when you hit it so those help for situations like these.
