How Do You Define Off-Roading?

Just know that the Rubicon Trail is a road and law enforcement even patrols it. I had to reassure the cops that we were doing the right thing while we ran the Rubicon trail.

How can they not be cool, driving a Jeep on trails, interacting with other Jeepers and getting paid for it! As a plus I bet when they break something they don't have to pay to fix it.

I don't think there is a hard line that defines "off road."
There are, of course, situations that are clearly on one side or the other, but there is a continuum that gets crossed on the way.

It is probably more a definition of what type of vehicle you need to go there than anything else.

And at some point everyone has to hike anyway.

My long time friend that has been an insurance agent for about 4 decades says off road is anything that is not on the road. That your vehicle is insured when damaged off road because, it is to difficult to label specific scenarios and list those scenarios in the policy. Overall, when considering off roading like we consider off roading, is such a small margin of vehicles, that it is just not worth the effort to try and exclude incidents off road. That is why your policy excludes if you enter your vehicle in timed events aka racing and will not cover the vehicle, but if you roll it off a mountain, you are still covered.

So the moral of the story is the Mall is technically off road. Just like your moms house.

by "road", do you mean "pavement" ?

roads in many parts of the world (even in the USA) are not paved.

I’ve gone through all the comments. I was originally hoping to hear what off-roading means to everyone personally and the reasons behind it, but it looks like the conversation turned more into defining what “off-road” actually is. Still a pretty interesting discussion though.

Off road in Iowa....not much here, and I could do most of it in a CUV, but it is still fun and a way to get away from people. There are a couple off road events/parks that get more involved, which is even more fun.
