I agree and did this with a Curt hitch marketed as fitting the "JK". Bottom line, don't remove the plate! I also reused the two factory bolts that held it on. On the wiring harness, etrailer.com is coming out with an option soon. It calls for a wire run directly to the battery but hoping to wire it to the aux power outlet instead. Here's the link to the product and also the instructions for the JL:

JL Wiring Harness 4 Pin

Here's the JL Wiring Harness Instruction

It's not out yet, so can't verify accuracy but they confirmed it will fit the JL.

Mopar part # 68354156AA

I predict that this OEM part (Trailer Tow wiring jumper harness for JL) will be talked about lots in this thread, in the future. Talked about by those wanting an inexpensive, ($28+-) simple, easy to install, 4 pin flat or 7 round, wiring solution for their JL/JLU that did not leave the factory with the tow package.

This harness is specific to the JL, It is a Trailer Tow wiring jumper harness. Parts specs has a note reading "7 & 4 pin wiring harness".

Apparently, this is a plug and play harness that plugs into connector under Rt. rear passenger light. End result is a pigtail with multiple wire ends that you can connect 4 pin flat or 7 pin round to.

You can buy it from a forum sponsor for $28.00+ or elsewhere...

Of course, it will take someone here buying the harness and installing the harness and setting it up with 4 or 7 pin connector and reporting back here in detail and with pics, before you see others going this route.

Unfortunately, this may be awhile because most here expect others to take the leap first and to do their footwork for them.

Anyway, all those who have been whining for a cheap and easy plug and play into JL factory harness... well, here it is it seems, being handed to you on a platter so to speak.

.
Just wanted to share that I ordered this part # and it is not what I expected. It's got a harness on one end that looks like it would plug into pre-existing wiring inside the Jeep, and the other end is made for a connection to a 7-pin harness for RV towing. It does not allow for plug and play hookup to use a 4-pin adapter. In fact, I'm seriously doubting it'll do anything at all for Jeeps with no factory tow wiring.

Oh well, at least it was just $35 wasted.

I’m returning the 200 dollar Mopar harness. For that price I expected plug and play, not the route to battery and repin connectors version that it is. Why can’t one simply tap into the tail lights? Surely two LED tail lights on a utility trailer won’t overtax the existing wires.

I have the etrailer part# 118782 on order and it should be here tomorrow. I am installing the hitch and wiring soon after. I can't justify paying the $200 at this point.

I just ordered it, and answered my own question from my prior post. The need for a power converter is to eliminate the possibility of overloading the stock wiring. Unlikely since my trailer has LEDs but it's best to be safe.

I think the converter is because you have LEDs.

Anyone install the etrailer adapter? Anyone with LED taillights?
Doing it tomorrow and will let you know how it goes. Not LEDs but the connection will be the same, wire crimps to the corresponding color wire. I was hoping for plug and play but it looks easy enough. Now if I just knew which way to pull on those rear panels to remove them ....... :(

Found this --- removing rear panels! :)

I installed the T-One wiring for a 4-pin harness yesterday. Got it from etrailer.com. Made by Tekonsha. Installation was a P I T A.

Had to drill a hole in the grommet on the firewall on driver's side to run the power wire through, zip tied it along the cowl, connected to battery with fused link. Not a big deal. Then, inside the Jeep ran the wire down the trim work drivers side along the door sills and couldn't get the trim pieces to line back up and snap into place properly. Decided to finish the next morning. At the rear, had to take half the Jeep apart to make access to fish the power wire through the tail light grommet into the cavity for the light. Had to drill a hole in the cavity with very little room to work for the ground wire screw. Had to use a ratchet to screw in a new self tapping screw with very little room to work after dropping and losing the original. Started bleeding after cutting my hand on the sharp metal inside the tail light cavity. Had to connect power wire, also inside the cavity, and use the lighter to activate the heat shrink. Finally got driver side connections done. Routed the passenger side connection along the top of the cross member and up into the cavity for the passenger tail light from the bottom. Ended up using most of the tools in my toolbox before it was all over: various sockets, two ratchets, magnet, pliers, wire crimp tool, trim tool, extra zip ties, drill, multiple bits, lighter, T40 torx bit, flat blade screwdriver, flashlight, band-aid, etc. etc.

I'm going to test it today on my utility trailer. IF the trailer doesn't light up I'm going to probably roll it into the river. IF the trailer does light up I'm going to drink a Miller Lite because I saved $650 over ordering it from the factory.

I installed the T-one adapter from etrailer yesterday. It took about 2 hours because of the power wire that has to be fished up front to the battery. Once i got everything hooked up i tested it on my trailer and everything works except the park lights on the trailer. I emailed etrailer about the issue and now waiting on a response.

So you can’t tap into the outlet in the back?

Im sure the power outlet in the back can be used because it is constant power. I was going to do the same but the power wire that came with the kit was pretty thick and i didnt want to take the chance of overloading the outlet because i am not sure of the draw. I decided run it to the battery with the provided fuse holder inline.

Same here, the power wire is very thick gauge wire so I didn't want to risk a fire. I ran it to the front and connected it directly to the battery with the fused link per the instructions. I probably had almost 4 hours total in my install, but all my trailer lights work perfectly and all my wires are out of sight and it looks factory.
