i made the jump to 5 of the same wheel and tire at the same time. I have around 7,000 miles on the new tires now. At my 5,000 mile service I had decided not to put the 5th tire into the rotation. Now just 2,000 miles more and I am regretting it.

The 4 on my rig still appear to be like new I’m thinking about checking circumference and then possibly adding the 5th into the mix ASAP.

What are people’s thoughts?

In the event it impacts people’s thoughts.... just a reminder my rig has 35” TOYO Open Country A/T II XTREME (35X12.50RTLT).
Just do it! It’ll be fine, it’s not too late.

You've just ensured no flat ever - as soon as you spend the $$$ on the spare you will never need that spare again.
Not true lol

I had a flat a couple of weeks ago and if I hadn’t had a full size spare I would have been screwed. Jeeps without full size spares or spares at all I’ll never understand lol

Yeah, right? LOL!

To mitigate that, I am going to rotate the spare in as well. It will somewhat lengthen the tread wear of all of the tires, and hopefully keep an unused spare from dry-rotting. I ran this idea by my shop; they said it was a good idea.
This is what I do:

4 tire rotation
5 tire rotation
4 tire rotation
5 tire rotation

It’s been working for me thus far and having that spare saved my ass a couple of weeks ago on the way to work.

Just curious, but why do you alternate between 4 wheel and 5 wheel rotations?

Thanks in advance.

I’ve just found that the 5 tire rotation every time wasn’t exactly necessary. You want your spare to at least have some more left as your tires wear more down the line. I figured this would ensure that would be the case during that time but still getting each tire in rotation at some point. It’s better than not getting your spare in rotation at all and better than all 5 tires without tread in the end.

This is the five-tire rotation that I use (every 8,000 km / 5,000 miles). To make it easier for the technician at the dealer I chalk the position that the tire is to be rotated to on the sidewall. For example, on the spare tire I will chalk on FR, etc. This seems to work well. It also lets you check that the rotation was done correctly.

Thank you for this! What makes this pattern of rotation ideal?

This rotation assures that the spare stays on all four locations before it goes back to the spare location.......:)

To further what Roky said - each tire gets equal time at each position before ending up at the Spare position. Because my tires are non-directional (BFG KO2s) half the time they are rotating clockwise and then on the other side of the Jeep half the time counter-clockwise, thus equalizing wear, even if your alignment is slightly out.
