So none of the ways are better, all really poor places to mount a 1.5db gain antenna. I would buy a 6db gain Midland whip and if you can't mount it high, get a cowl mount on Amazon and mount it there. You'll also need 6meter NMO coax and run thru the firewall grommet. don't mount stubby there as transmit range will suck. whip will take a beating there

That mount also works for JKs

What do you consider poor range with a 5Watt midland mxt105? maybe we aren't expecting enough as we all think they are working great. I know the 3 of us that live in the same town were surprised we could talk to each other as probably 5-8 miles apart

5 miles with 5 watts on GMRS or 70cm is great. Generally possible when both parties are line of sight straight enough to send Morse code by flashlight. Other times much less likely.

thank you. I think I will just order a spare antenna to have in the jeep in case it goes bad.

Generally line of sight is not possible in many if not most off road situations, Why would anyone want to settle for 5 miles when they can talk 15, 20, 25, 50 or even 100 miles on GMRS/70CM. Of course some of those higher distances do count on line of sight but with an MXT275 or MXT115 (my club did a 2800 mile, 3 week overland trip on the Heart of the West Trail HOW and decided that we would require minimum of 15walls for any of our members with a 6DB antenna) we have found that on many non line of sight trails that 7 to 10 miles is totally possible with 15 watts. My 50watt MXT500 and my MXT575 has easily hit 25 to 40 miles on the trails in UT, NM, AZ, NV, CA, WA, OR, MT, Wy and CO. Off roading is as much a safety issue as it is fun. Being able to reach out and touch in case of an emergency is most important. Knowing repeaters in the area you are going to be in and how to program them is also important.

I've got mine mounted to the Mopar a-pillar bracket as well. I'm just running the ghost antenna, but I need to shorten my coax since I've got a good 3 feet of extra cable I don't need. For now, though, it works.

It's a Mopar product you should be able to order online or at any dealership. Benny over at @AllMoparParts.com can likely hook you up. Unfortunately, I don't think you can just get one side, they come in a pair. Also, they've been redesigned since then and look a little different, but the part number you're looking for is 82215427AB.

It's a nice clean look but much of your signal is being blocked by the Jeep. Ghost is more efficient and gets 360 full power range mounted high on roof with NO obstructions. Also LED lig

hts close to Ghost can affect performance also. MIDLAND recommends mounting high no obstructions also. IMO with over 50 years of 2 wqy radio experience the best set up for an Wrangler is Midlands 7.5db gain Grand Vista antenna mounted to an Amazon spare tire antenna mount. They have for JK and JL

I have the 48" Bull Bar on my Gladiator BUT if you have a JK or JL the Best setup for you to take advantage of your 15W radio is a spare tire carrier mount from Amazon and Midlands 48" 7.5db gain Grand Vista whip. Cheaper than bull bar and will get maximum distance. Use code on Midlands website for anything you want: JEEPEX15 for a 15% discount
