Outside temperature plays in a big factor in my mpg. My Honda Accord usually gets 40+ MPG on the highway during my daily commute. When it's cold outside I lose about 10 mpg. When the temp is below 20 degrees, I'm lucky to get 27 mpg highway where I normally get 40 mpg.
Same here. When it's sunny outside I drop 30 mpg in my Porsche. :cwl:

But in all seriousness, you're correct that it does impact it -- but that large of a drop may signify a larger issue with your vehicle. You shouldn't be impacted more than 3-4 mpg (at the most? like ~10%) extreme swings unless your commute is super duper short and the engine/tires aren't warming up.

I've watched my mileage and seen differences with roof racks, tires, fuels, and even a little tiny itty bit with oils. These made between 0.25-2 mpg changes if driven similarly.

The biggest impact to mileage has always been with how I was driving. Tracking and wheeling will get very poor mileage. lol

My best mileage is always rolling down out of the mountains with a tail wind, on the bike.

For the example in the link the difference in the ratios is 11% vs the 19% difference in the JL axles so the efficiency impact of the 4.10 vs 3.45 gearing would be somewhat greater, so on ratio alone you should see that impact significantly more. And remember that the 1-3 MPG imoact, while not seemingly large on the surface is a big difference in economy for vehicles that already have low efficiency. Small losses or boosts in the Wrangler matter more than in most sedans.

While final drive plays a major role, it’s also about the ability to keep the engine in the sweet spot where the engine can produce enough RPM/HP to overcome rolling/wind resistance at speed, a 2.85 axle would have diminishing returns because it would still need a certain elevated RPM to keep the HP up, equally the 4.10 axles might make that more efficient sweet spot out of reach at highway speed.

The we multiply all the other variables (heavier/bigger tires, heavier bumper/bits, less efficiency focused more heavy duty focus comoinent, change in fender position creating more air resistance, etc) which very quickly erode MPG.

Only have 80 miles on the clock but this is what I saw on a Rubicon 4dr. No idea what gas the dealer put in the tank.

1) In town ~15 MPG
2) On the freeway ~62 MPH, without cruise control ~17 MPG
3) On the freeway 62 MPH, with cruise control ~21 MPG

I come from a Miata (and other cars with low drag coefficient) which is very easy to keep at a constant speed. I found it very hard to do the same in the JL. Not sure if I just need to get used to that floaty-truck feel or if being a big box makes it harder. Either way, I bet I just need some practice.

ahh-another miata/wrangler owner like me-had about 8 of each over the years-still have one of both-did have a harley in the mix but decided i wasnt going to put my life in the hands of a 16yr old texting while putting on makeup while driving any longer

Haven't had time to read 9 pages of MPGiesels anecdotes.

I'm personally curious if the 2 door 6 speed base I'm planning on will actually pull that 25mpg highway. That's a lot for this type of vehicle. Gone seem to be the days of the old straight-six pulling 14mpg with any tire bigger than 31's.

I also came from a Miata MX-5!

Finally had my first fill-up. Gas mileage was 19.71. I'm a happy new owner! That was mostly around town with a mix of town roads and highway. Also included some remote starts just idling times too. Had to warm it up for wifey.

17.1 in the boulder CO area last two weeks of ownership. Lots of snow, engaging 4x4. Going to 2.5 with 33's here shortly. Expect this to go down. Using only TopTier 87 from Shell. :D

19.2 around Denver and a trip to Estes Park this last weekend. 400 miles of which 85% are city. Very little highway cruising.

All Highway in the rain from Bethesda, MD to Scranton, PA and back(470 miles) yesterday got 23.1 in JL Sport S with LSD and rubi wheels with stock all terrain tires. With 2200 miles averaging just about 20.9 mostly city driving.
