Yeah. I know. No one buys a Jeep for its fuel economy, so I suspect I will get some pushback over this post. But still, ...

I keep an eye on my fuel economy with my 2 door Wrangler Sport (4 cylinder) when doing around town. I want to see how well I can do, even if it is of only secondary importance. But I had to drive to the other side of Phoenix, which is a distance of about 60 miles the other day, and noticed that freeway driving was giving me very high figures. When I got where I was going the meter showed me 38.1 mpg for driving at (mostly) 65 mph, and that simply astonished me. That is up there with the Honda Fits and similar small cars and it made me wonder if this was unusual for that kind of driving. When just doing our short time highway and normal street driving the figure is much lower - about 25-27 mpg.

I know that theater figures are a bit inflated and that I was probably getting more like 36 mpg, but that is still amazing and I wondered if anyone else keeps track of that and what figures they might have seen.

No. I did not buy my Wrangler for its fuel economy, but that figure is still pretty amazing.

Several threads on the subject. Here's one. Yes, your 38.1 mpg (as displayed on the dashboard TFT screen?) really seems anomalous, and likely incorrect. Did you double check the calculation by hand?

Yes.

After that drive I did a lot of city driving and filled up today. The mileage figure had dropped to 32 and the actual mileage, based on miles and gallons, came out to 30. That is the 6-7 percent drop I expected, based on earlier fillups.

30 is still pretty dang impressive for a turbo engine and the aerodynamics of a brick imo. I still can't get my v6 2-door over 19MPG no matter what I do (still only ~2k miles). How many miles on yours?

On my JKR 3.6 around town, about 16 mpg. Our JLR 3.6 around town, about 19 mpg. Ours are 2 doors, with no extra weight added. Plus we are not heavy on the pedal.

I would be surprised if you get close to 20 around town, but you can check your own as accurately as you can over multiple tanks if necessary. You have to be consistent with how you fill up, for instance I've never been able to put nearly as much in my tank as it is supposed to hold. And yes I don't think the dash display is completely accurate.
I didn't pay much attention to my dash display but in stock Sport trim, JLU, 3.6L, 8speed it would report up to 23 highway. With Rubicon tires on it I calculate around 21 for highway over multiple long trips. I actually don't do much city driving so I don't bother to check it.

The Wrangler now has just over 5.000 miles on it. We bought about 9 months ago and we use it only for local driving. All of our out of town trips are in an RV, so all the mileage on the Jeep are due to local driving (except for when we tow the Jeep with our RV someplace, but that does not happen too often).

On the other hand this is Arizona, so the terrain where we drive is mostly flat and a goodly part of our driving is freeway driving, then followed by surface streets, but most traffic lights are about a mile apart where we live so it is not constant stop and go driving.

Our 3.6 sport S on the factory Michelins gets 22-23 highway if I keep it under 75

Yes. That is correct.

When we first bought the Wrangler I started to keep a list of our fill ups. Every time I put gas in I noted the mileage, the amount of fuel and the estimated mpg from the dash display and did the calculation after 14 fill ups. I assumed that that was enough to account for variations in fuel pumps, in cutoffs and in weather conditions, and the average was about 22.4 mpg.

I also computed the average from the dash display and it turned out that the actual mileage figure (computed from mileage and fuel) was about 6-7 percent lower than the TFT dash display, and that difference has persisted in subsequent computations so I take it to be an accurate estimate of actual fuel usage differences. That is, I now automatically assume that actual fuel economy is something like 6-7 percent lower than the dash display says.

This is southern Arizona, so during April through August when I was keeping these first records the air conditioning in the Jeep was always on, and that must have driven the mileage figures down a lot considering that this is a small 4 cylinder engine. When it cooled off and we no longer needed the air conditioning I again started checking and found that the normal around town mileage had risen to about 25-26 mpg (actual) while the dash display was still about 6-7 percent higher. So that is why I felt I could assume that if the dash display was telling me that I was getting 38.1 mpg, then I was actually getting something like 35 mpg when doing highway driving for that one trip without surface streets and at a relatively steady speed of 65 mph.

FWIW - I always use Cruise Control when it is appropriate and I tend to be light on the gas pedal. No sudden starts, and I try to allow the Jeep to coast to traffic light stops rather than just hit the brake before the stop, but that is how I have driven all of my cars so it is not just for the Jeep. I keep this information just to keep track of what is happening and when we are driving someplace off-road I pay no attention to this stuff. Still, I do find it interesting.

Given the aerodynamics of the Wrangler, the fact that you have the 3.6 and are doing 75 mph, I think that your mileage figure is amazingly good. The speed limits where we live max out at 65 mph so I have never taken the Jeep over about 70. Are you using Cruise Control?

Yes on the CC. Right now we have the roof rack bars removed for the winter as I don’t need them. NOT going kayaking for a while yet. They are Rhino Rack aero bars but will still cost me about 1.5 mpg highway. Those were summer numbers as well. Monday will be a 225 mile round trip event so I will try to get a baseline for winter time and 70-75 mph.

We bought it for the fun and being able to haul our kayaks and flat tow it behind our RV but I am happy with the fuel economy I am getting from it. Longer trips that we want better economy we will take the A7. 310hp supercharged V6 that gets close to 28-30 mpg.
