Hey Brad, I was checking shit out on the ramp and snapped a pic of the MC jounce fully compressed….. the fat top part of the bump is a little bigger diameter than the metal jounce tube so that last inch stays put, where the oems stuff all the way to the metal……

An update on replacing my factory foam bump stops.

First, I replaced the foam stops with stops made from a harder urethane material. They were ~$20 from Amazon. I'm hoping urethane will be more durable than the OEM foam material. Eventually, I plan to install a lift. I will decide then whether to keep urethane bump stops or try something different.

Second, I followed the YouTube video procedure where I only raised the vehicle and didn't remove the spring. The problem I ran into with urethane vs foam is that urethane doesn't compress.

With the vehicle only raised, I couldn't get the new bump stop through the spring coils. I disconnected the sway bar, used spring compressors, but it was a No Go. I used my belt sander and flatten the one side to get the total thickness 1.725" or less. With a slightly thinner bump stop, I could squeeze it through the spring coils. I placed the flat side inward so you can't see it.

It took me a total of two hours, but most of the time was figuring out how to get the urethane bump stop between the coils. The installation of the second bump stop took maybe 20 minutes.

I also learned that urethane gets hot when sanded. It doesn't turn into dust, like sanding wood. It turns into a hot goo. I would let it cool before removing it from the parent piece.

An other update. I don't like the hard urethane bump stops. They don't seem to have much give. The engage suddenly since there's very little up travel. Compared to no bump stops, the ride is about the same harshness, except the clunk is muted compared to no bump stops.

Long term, I'll probably go with some Metalcloak rubber bump stops when I install a lift kit. I haven't decided if I want to remove the urethane bump stops and replace with a softer foam OEM style bump stop.

If anybody is discovering this in the future (op has found his solution) Durobumps makes a no-lift version if you just want a better/softer/more progressive bump stop than stock.

I get the rear installation. But I don't get the front installation, specially on an XR with the extended tube - where does that bolt bolt to, and is it even long enough for the XR tube?

Yeah that is completely unhelpful. They are not specific or direction oriented. I reached out to them and the representative was confused themselves.

Yes. Apparently there is a already a hole at the top. I looked at the instruction for another bump stop that was more helpful. Basically it is like installing a lower bump stop extension in reverse - you need to drop in a bolt from the top of the metal bump stop tube into that hole and tread a nut on it. Hint tape or glue the nut into a socket (NASCAR style) to make your life easier.

Ok, so if anyone comes across this, I installed durobumps bump stops and they are awesome. Just get a magnetic 9/16 socket with an extension. It is a little tricky getting the nut to tighten down but they are worth it. Bolt goes upward into the bumpstop and the nut goes in from the top. Make sure to have a magnetic socket or you won’t be able to line it up. Have a small tool magnet handy as the nut fell out a few times and I had to fish it back out even with the magnetic socket.

I have an XR so even though the tubes are longer, I was able to make it work. I got the front and rears discounted or I would have probably gone with metalcloak but if you have the money, I think they are worth it.

On a separate note, the rear was a pain in the ass. I don’t care what they say, I am strong as all hell and even with using dish soap, there was no way to install them by hand. You will need a floor jack to compress them in place.
