From where did it come?

I had sorta been one of those ppl who think everyone getting smacked by rocks must be following big trucks too closely while flying down a highway. (My opinion changed while reading these forums a while ago.)
Yesterday, I got hit by a something. This thing seriously looked like it dropped from the sky. (I don't think it's the bug which makes a brief appearance before the damage in one of the videos.) Even though it doesn't matter, I'm very curious as to what hit me, and where it originated. Anyone want to make an educated guess based on these videos?
My best guess right now is it was from under the tire of a vehicle in the opposing lane. ?‍

Small rocks like that can come from traffic in opposite lanes, or they can get kicked up from the vehicle in front of you. Sometimes they come off your own tires. Hard to say, really, but it does happen!

There were additional rocks to the left just before that one got you.

Note that I've been told in other topics that I need to learn how to drive if this happens. Thanks for providing evidence that shows that it's not always the driver's fault.

I've seen crows crack nuts by flying high and dropping them on the road. Maybe something like that?

When I’ve gotten a cracked windshield, it has always been from traffic going the opposite direction. I’m surprised this one traveled quite so far, given the size of the median, but a very common occurrence nonetheless.

Right!? I don't think there would have been any way to avoid it. I even had to replay the recording in slow motion to see it coming!

Definitely this. While it's not completely impossible to avoid rocks kicked up from the vehicles in front of you by keeping an extended distance, it's probably harder to avoid the ones kicked up from opposing traffic. Shit gets punted up and into your lane while you're driving into it.

Really not sure if it even helps, but I try to stay as far over as I can when semis, triaxles and guys with 10" of tire poke go by. Probably kicking up my own rocks while doing that, but c'est la vie.

Both of my cracks have come from heavy freeway traffic in another state. Traffic going a little faster than you are will pass you and immediately pull into the lane in front of you, so you end up unintentionally following a person too close until you can slow down and let them pull in front of you.
