Hello forum, need some advice. I am going to fly two small flags (12x18) on the back of Jeep, using a CB mount and two whips next to spare. Flags are USA and Gadsden. I plan on the USA flag whip to be slightly taller than Gadsden whip. My question, looking at the back of Jeep, should USA flag be next to tire with Gadsden beside it or opposite orientation?
The flag is covered by Public Law 94-344....what to NOTE: It does NOT cover all use of the flag, it is a guide.

I was going to write a post asking why people put flags on their vehicles, but I didn't want to get anyone to upset thinking I was trolling. But I'll ask anyways. What's your reason?

Personal Preference. It goes right along with the Marine Corps decals I have on the hard top back window.

It’s a legitimate question, and you asked respectfully.

I fly my flags out of pride in our country overall. I am not proud of many things our country has done, but I am proud of the founding principles and of those patriotic folks who uphold those principles. Which leads to #2: Patriotism. Our country is flawed and imperfect, but it’s one of the best in the world, in spite of being one of the youngest. My family can be dysfunctional, but I love them too.

The third reason I fly the flags is to push back against those folks who are US citizens, have the benefits of that citizenship, but claim to be triggered by the sight of the flag, and claim to “hate” their country. I believe there are organized groups of those people who feign triggering and hatred, but sow it amongst others to try to fundamentally change the country into something it was never intended to be. One of their tactics is to change definitions and meanings (such as what the two flags represent), and change history, distorting them to beyond recognition.

I had a long post with about 5 quotes in it, but decided that was no fun.

Know that, as someone with liberal-leaning beliefs from California, I think flags are ok and cool and think everyone should feel welcome to fly one on their house, vehicle, clothing... It belongs to all of us.

I think the talks of people hating flags and hating the country and stuff are over-exaggerated. Again, I live in California, in the kind of city where some people might expect to find a lot of "America haters" if you will. By my own perception I'd say far less than 1% of the population would have such an opinion. On days you'd expect to see American flags flown outside, there are many. Lots of people have them on their cars.

Kyanche,

Thank you for at least be willing to discuss a topic that can trigger so many things. I applaud your efforts here!

This is what we need in this country more than anything, getting back to open and honest communications. Where do we find that anymore? It’s a very tough question. Since 2020 I have had my feelings, tried to discuss them with people with different points of view and have lost some friends due to all of this. Educated, well meaning church going people. MAkes me wonder really what is going on.

The way I deal with all of these things is my revolving front door. It’s never locked, it’s always open, you can come and go as you please and I’ll always welcome you back. That is me in a nutshell. This has worked for me for well over 50 years, and I started this when I joined the USAF. So many people come and go when you serve, PCS moves, retirements, separations and the like.

But even now, I have no idea if some people that walk out that door will ever be back through it again.

But it’s OPEN and UNLOCKED…..

Isn't it ok to leave it up at night if you shine a light on it? That's how they do it on fire trucks out here. You should do that!

(I just like lights on things lol)

If you ask me, the most important piece of flag etiquette is: These flags are for every citizen (and resident) of the USA to fly and enjoy. They're part of our country and culture. Don't be afraid to fly a flag because of the flag being associated with a particular group of people. The american flag(s) belong to you just as much as they belong to anyone else in this country.

I'll actually go one further here: I think if you fly American flags on your vehicle or your house you have a greater responsibility to act as a role model adult. When someone displays American flags on their car and commits acts of road rage and shouts obscenities and racial slurs from their car, they're doing a much greater disservice to our country and what those flags mean, than anything else.

So yea, I will hold you to a high standard there! But I like it! Looks nice. :)
This is one of the most reasoned responses to someone flying the US flag I’ve read.

I don't have any flags on my Jeep, only because to fly one I would fly all and I don't the real estate on my Jeep to fly:

American Flag

Texas Flag

US Army Flag

POW Flag

"Don't Tread On Me" Flag

"Come and Take It" Flag

Amen.

There are many common issues to discuss: saving Social Security for the next generation, rebuilding our infrastructure, etc... And, yes, the vast majority of Americans are in favor of securing our borders. Let's fix those three things that we all agree on. We are currently paralized by silliness.

The American flag should be a unifying symbol - we all love it.

The American flag is always flown on its own right, and higher than any other flag when in a group. So on the back of the Jeep, looking forward, the American flag should be on the right (passenger) side.

The Gadsden flag is from the Revolutionary War. I'm sick of it somehow being my fault every time a symbol is used out of context or otherwise "wrong" in someone's eyes. All sorts of things have been co-opted for all sorts of reasons; my feeling is it an opportunity to explain the right of it rather than erasing its history because some idiot used it for something else. Not that some folk will give you the opportunity to explain...

Even the Dixie Flag is one that has a HISTORY and I feel it is unjustified to try and re-write history without it.
Not to delve into politics or anything, but while I do agree that the Confederate flag is a piece of our US history that shouldn't be erased into oblivion like it never existed, I truly don't understand some of the dudes up here north of the Mason-Dixon line that fly it in front of their house or on their truck, often without Old Glory flying at all (and sometimes with, which I also find a bit strange).

And while both my granddads were probably a bit racist and politically incorrect to some extent, having fought in WW2 and the Korean War, they'd only ever fly the US flag and would likely be disgusted to see anything else flown or given the same respect. They were both incredibly proud of our flag.

The Gadsen and Betsy Ross flags are quite a bit different and hold a direct lineage to our Red, White and Blue, rather than being representative of a faction that wanted to be an entity outside of the US.

Just my 2¢ and people are certainly free to do whatever they want, which is something our good old Stars and Stripes means to me :flag:

Good points all Sir.

I get tired of the Media as well as others that are really trying to re-write history in a way that makes things more palatable to them.

My Love for the Stars and Stripes started I think even before I went to grade school. But saying the Pledge of Allegiance made it even more worthwhile for me. Then came my time in Boy Scouts where respect for the Flag was really taught to all the Boys. As I stated, it was taught in Basic Train too for me in the early 1970’s. So for me it’s been there for me a longtime.

Today I busted my butt helping neighbors out. I still believe in strong neighborhoods and I’ll help out where I can. After finishing up all of my work, I sat in the backyard shade in my Adirondack Chair with my Service Dog Max. I thought about the day, 9/11, and the concern I had for all the people down there, to include my wife as well as my wife’s cousin for his train stop was the Twin Towers. Bat as I say there and re-lived my thoughts of those days, I watched my Flag flying in the wind, on a pole that my Father In Law made and had in his yard for many years, and when Mom had to seek that home, that Flag Pole was taken down and brought to my house and has been flying a flag on it for well over 10 years. The first flag flown was my retirement flag given to me roughly a year before 9/11. I wanted that flag on that pole because of the feelings I had that day.

Sorry, it seems like I get a little long winded. My life is winding down, but I still try and make things good in my life every day that I am here.
