I think almost every one of us legitimately thought we were going to break the lever the first time we tried to shift. Every JL is known to have a very very stiff tcase lever from factory. It loosens right up with use. Even if you don’t hit the dirt often, practice shifting from time to time. Either when stationary or on straight roads where you can keep the wheels straight.
That was basically what I was doing tonight. I figured some light snow would give me a good idea of how she rides in 4wd, so I pulled into an empty lot to test her out. I knew the transfer case would be tight with it being so new...but I definitely wasn't expecting it to be that bad lol.

Okay, so I've driven a 4WD before. Our truck has PT4WD...we had a Rav with it and I drove a rental Jeep for about a month that I tested out the 4WD in...and none of them ever felt like they were going to break my wrist....until my 22 JLU.

Is it supposed to be that tight at first? Going from 4H to 4L is fine, but I legitimately feel like putting into 4H is going to either snap my wrist or snap the shifter (pretty sure the shifter would win.)
If you think this is bad, you should have had a CJ or even a TJ at times. The JL is like a hot knife going through butter. A combo of it loosening up and getting used to it & you'll be loving it.

Any need to worry about speed when shifting into 4h, like an upper limit? I thought I read 45mph somewhere but I might be making that up completely.

I used mine once so far, it was reasonably stiff getting it into 4h, I might have been doing 10-15 when I shifted it. It went into 4h just fine, and came out just fine when I got up the (snowy) hill.

I agree, the old CJ7 was a challenge on a good day.

My CJ is so wallered-out it sometimes puts itself into 4-lo.

Yeah, the transfer case shifter is more than a little stiff until it's been used a few times. It's one of those Jeep things that you'll get accustomed to. Part of it is the linkage getting broken in and the rest is the driver learning how to wrestle it.

The strange thing is my wife‘s Sahara was exactly like this. I thought I was gonna break it trying to get into 4H when we first got it. But my 392 goes from 4H Auto into 4H like butter. It’s so weird.

My vote is for the old no fault direct shift twin sticks ( or three with Warn OD )

After a little experience a person will get the (feel) of when the gears are seated. If not seated it will pop out of 4h back to 2h. The time it happened to me, it was my own fault(gears not seated totally). Like someone posted earlier, you can shift into 4h or 4l while not moving. I always put my transfer case into 4l when I park for obvious reasons. This also works the system and gets easier as time goes by. Go out and play around with the system also pay attention to the engagement lights. Enjoy that jeep.
Ok, I'm stumped. What's the "obvious" reason for putting it into 4l when parking?

First time going into 4H I cruised around 10 mph and it wasn't to hard to pull into 4h. Maybe a little extra pressure, not much.
