EcoDiesel vs 4XE

Yeah DEF is weird. I drove from Springfield TN to the Rio Grande Valley (1200 miles) and consumed a little under 1/2 tank of def. But I have been doing a lot of short city driving around town, and it hasn't budged much. I'm still slightly under half a tank of DEF. I'm still waiting to put DEF so I can try it out at a fuel island around a truck stop.

I’ve only put 100miles on mine (picked up Sat) about half city half highway driving. The gas has hardly moved but DEF is at 3/4 tank. Not sure if it was 100% full on delivery because it took me a bit to find the DEF gauge. Gonna keep a much closer eye on it moving forward. I thought I would get 2-3 gas fill ups in between DEF refills

I am betting it wasn’t full. Mine was about 3/4. Roughly 1000 miles and we have used 1/4. I don’t see a path to 10k on the DEF, that’s for sure.

I've said this numerous times on this forum, but the info seems to be overlooked.

DEF consumption is roughly 3% of your diesel use. So, you can't complain about DEF use without actually measuring it. The gauge is notoriously wrong and you can't estimate your use with it. You have to top off and start logging your diesel and DEF.

For example, if you are getting an average of 24mpg, you are getting at least 800mpg of DEF.

If you can't afford $4.80 for every 800 miles driven, then you most definitely should not buy the diesel (estimating $12 for a 2.5gal jug and 24mpg).

Thanks for the unsolicited financial advice. I appreciate it very much. Sold my 2019 with 30k for more than I bought it for so I can afford the diesel just fine.

I also appreciate the 3% rule. If that is the case how the hell did Jeep estimate 10k for DEF fillups? Is the 3 % deal stated somewhere or is that just industry knowledge?

When I bought my Ecodiesel in Fall of 2020, the local Costco was selling diesel for $1.70 while regular unleaded was over $2.00. Your analysis is sound for today, but the variables are a moving target. But...just to be clear, in any case, it's all about the TORQUE. The fuel mileage is just a side benefit.

Try doing this with a Pentastar (or maybe even with a 392) :

I haven’t seen an actual Dyno of a 4xe, but it would be interesting to see an overlay. A couple hundred ft lbs from the electric motors is available instantly, then it would take the ICE some RPM to push it past.

You are welcome for the free financial advice......since it wasn’t aimed at you. People on here and other forums try and use the “added cost of DEF” as a reason to not buy a new diesel. So, I posted up what DEF actually adds to the cost of ownership.

Totally agree. Def and oil change cost. Like others have said, I do love that we have all of this choice right now. I am thinking you will see a consolidation of options as supply chains get worked through. Simplified production equals simplified supply chain and lord knows we need that.

If you need a bunch of torque to get a vehicle unstuck, absolutely the 4xe wins hands down by weight alone. Add in the fact that it does make more torque at lower rpms, and you can't actually believe the diesel wins that competition? Hook them both up to a strap and the diesel gets drug every time.
