I don’t get the Diesel = better economy argument…perhaps I’m a little slow, but in Texas right now gas is $4 per gallon, diesel is $5 per gallon. The 4xe does 20mpg when the battery’s done (not great I admit) the Diesel does 25 (better, but let’s not get too happy with that). Now a quick bit of math tells me that‘s $0.20 per mile vs. $0.20 per mile. Seems like you should buy which ever one floats your boat better - there could be a ton or reasons for one vs. the other, fuel economy isn’t one of them.

Well, I wouldnt say it's been a "disaster". You can't really base an opinion off of forum posts. They're never accurate at all. No one gets on a forum to sing the praises of any vehicle. I'd say it's right where they want it to be notwithstanding the few incidents. They're releasing a 4Xe across most models AFAIK.

Shit. Look up Lasik on the internet and your think there are millions walking around permanently blinded by it.
You mean you’re not going to see a lot of love for the EV in the diesel sub forum? Lol

When I bought my Ecodiesel in Fall of 2020, the local Costco was selling diesel for $1.70 while regular unleaded was over $2.00. Your analysis is sound for today, but the variables are a moving target. But...just to be clear, in any case, it's all about the TORQUE. The fuel mileage is just a side benefit.

Try doing this with a Pentastar (or maybe even with a 392) :):

Yep, as I say there are many reasons to prefer one over the other. Of course in this case it isn’t torque either. EcoDiesel very impressive 442 ft lbs. 4xe 470. ;-)

I had a 4xe on order and followed things closely. The NHTSA official site has a lot of logged issues with the 4xe and at last check a few weeks ago, the polls for the 4xe in the Facebook owners group and on the site dedicated to it have ~1/4 of people having had serious issues requiring more than a week in the shop, many unresolved. I understand that's weighted towards the complainers but even if it's 50% high, that's 1/10 people having very serious issues for a car that is for most owners not one year old.

The straw that broke me out of that order were the many reports both at NHTSA and in forums of the highway shut downs. As in driving 75 MPH and the car just completely goes black and you have to muscle it to the shoulder. That's nucking futs.

Personally it’s really about your daily use, travel needs etc etc, some people only drive so far to work daily and have the option of a charging station at their job which can juice up your jeep, so that’s obviously that the 4xE would be more up their needs, then you have others who travel long ways to work or take long trips and with electric being a fairly new technology not too many charging stations are available in every area so diesel might be more of their cup of tea, it’s really about what best works for you, I drove both and can’t say anything bad about one over the other! Ultimately I went diesel cause that fit my needs better, still an improvement in mpg over my unlimited 16 rubi V6
I LOVED my 4xe test drive. It was awesome.

Interesting RE Costco and diesel. The ones near us don't sell it. I see online that some do. Grrr.

For sure, serious reliability issues would definitely worry me (even if it is a Jeep - I mean we kinda know what we’re buying here right?), but NHTSA complaints are a bad place to get a good view of that. Firstly they don’t separate out the models…all Wranglers for 2021 are lumped in the 135 complaints, but true, there are clearly quite a few that complain about engine loss at speed and many of those clearly are 4xe’s…but check out the 2021 Ford F-150 from the same year. “Only” 88 complaints, but many of those are for complete loss of engine power at highway speeds - no hybrid there. Stuff happens….it’s not good and I’d hate to be one of the ones to whom stuff was happening, but put it into contexts of >33K 4xe’s sold last year and a few of them having serious failures probably isn’t all that unusual….you just don’t normally read through NHTSA complaints (and let’s face it, the world’s scary enough without doing that!). When you’re bored, try reading through medical journals…you’ll be amazed that you manage to breath in and out on a regular basis and start to wonder if you are the only one alive without some weird and really nasty condition.

The Costco near me also does not sell diesel. It is disappointing.

Impressive. no way I am hooking up my rig to a semi. That had to be extremely tough on the drive train. I love pulling people out but I don’t want want to ruin my car by doing it. Crazy torque in this thing, all the way through the fuel tank, not just for 10 miles. I am looking forward to when Jeep makes a worthwhile Electric and electric cars make sense in general. I saw a Volvo suv take off like a damn rocket the other day. It will be fun.

Unfortunately the Costcos that carry diesel are not necessarily near where you'd want to live anyway. We have two in Maricopa County - both right next to major freeways. I only fill up there when I want to exercise the Jeep with a short road trip.

Prior to ordering I also was flipping between the various engine models.
I opted for the Diesel engine because I can't help but smile every time I hear that diesel chatter when I did my test drives
Don't get me wrong, the torque and mpg are nice, but it really came down to that diesel chatter sound :)

Overall though the trails I plan on hitting with some regular frequency after my Wrangler arrives are each about 2 hours highway drive away or more. Since Covid, I've been working from home with few trips about town to do groceries, so if this trend continues, I think most of miles will be from the highway to reach the various trails I'll want to go see.

Either way I'm excited and can't wait.

I agree. However, I am way surprised at how quiet this actually is. You can tell it’s a diesel, but I would argue at highway it is quieter than the 3.6. Difference in RPM’s is the difference I am sure.

I did not watch that video. I wonder why he made it because he was so stoked at getting the GDE tune that he got her GC tuned as well.
