It would also help If the US would stop exporting more petroleum products than we import. But…so goes the world market we are in. In theory, we could be self sufficient.

Wouldn't our domestic petroleum prices need to increase dramatically for it to no longer be more profitable to export?

Thats a good question. One I don’t have an answer for. But petroleum now is driven by world prices so I would assume there is more profit in exporting.

Yes. Lots of money to made exporting diesel to diesel hungry (and short supplied) Europe right now.

Note: We can talk about this and not go political! This is economics.

I used to be a diesel guy (coming from old school VW's) but unless it's a truck for hauling, I won't own one. The main reason is they are overly complex but mainly due to emissions. Thus they create many problems in the real world when you are doing service. The benefit of a diesel is minimal for sedans and things like Jeeps. If you read the intranets, then you'll have people going all out on special oil and huge amounts of filter changes, yet claim they are saving money. I feel that diesels are for people that want to be different and use that engine as a hobby for maintenance.

My neighbor works for Exxon Mobil, so we have had this discussion. In the end, it's a market price and who will pay the most. Europe will do that. Unless we nationalize the oil companies or force them to sell a prescribed amount in the US to maintain a certain price that makes people happy, we will have to deal with economics. In the end, the oil companies are making up for the losses from 2 years ago. We had great prices because there was a commodity that the consumption for it went way down. As most know, we use oil for plastics and chemicals, thus those industries took a dump.

Well I had a Ram Cummins a few years back 2020 to be exact. I was getting about 14 miles to the gallon with 37” tires. I traded it straight across for my eco-diesel rubi that gets about 22 miles to the gallon on 37” tires. I can not imagine what it would cost now with diesel running close to $6 a gallon to fill it up. Its going to cut in to people way of thinking on using or buying these big heavy trucks that run on diesel.

My jeep gets used only on the weekend to run around town or offroad so the amount of fuel burned in two weeks is about 6 gallons. I do believe our country is sending fuels to other countries, which is making the US have a shortage on the fuels.

I do believe our country is sending fuels to other countries, which is making the US have a shortage on the fuels.
Companies will always follow the profits!

Big diesel profits to be made in Europe.

Big money here too and there will be more diesel refining domestically but it will take time. The only credible article I've seen so far in the WSJ says rising diesel prices through at least the end of 2022.

$6.30 in the Philly area now. (Up $1 in a week.) I wonder if we will get to $8. $7 sure looks like a lock.

The RAV4 Hybrid I was about to sell is going to be in my driveway a bit longer.

Not fair for typical citizens who aren't driving tractor trailers.

Not fair for typical citizens who aren't driving tractor trailers.
Federal gas tax: 18.4 cents / gal.
Federal diesel tax: 24.4 cents / gal.
CO gas tax: 22.0 cents / gal.
CO diesel tax: 20.5 cents / gal.

They can't really have different tax rates for different diesel usages without going down the red dye path that they do for commercial off road vehicles.

At least it's a tax per gallon and not a percentage.

Reg gas $3.99 vs diesel $4.99 here right now
Our 2.0 comes very close to the mpg of the diesel so...
We did almost buy a Ram diesel during the early covid days
new 2019 ram classic diesel - $31.5k
new 2020 ram classic Hemi - $29k
Different dealers and each had 100 hundred of the one they sold
diesel had a couple more bells and whistles and I wanted it for hauling giant trailers that I don't actually have
Went with the gas gulper instead cuz...
Yeah, It's a Hemi !

I don’t think you can put all Diesel owners in one group. I certainly did not order a diesel for a hobby but for the torque it provides for towing. My last Rubicon was a 3.6 gas and was a dog on the highway and towing.
