E-brake concern

Mine was popping and last week lost one of the two cables from the handle connection. The pop sound is likely a cable slipping in the connector and reseating when you have pulled al the way up. Open it up and check is the right choice

It’s a parking brake, not an emergency brake, and you have an automatic so it’s basically pointless.

I beg to differ. I always use the parking brake in my automatic. The parking brake takes stress of the parking pawl when transmission is set to Park. If the pawl goes out or it gets hit hard while parked your Jeep is off to the races.

Absolutely, I often use the hand brake especially if parked on an incline/ decline. I’ll engage it prior to releasing the foot pedal brake to take stress off the auto transmission. I forwarded the video to my dealer’s service writer and he is going to schedule a repair/service.

Regardless of whether you believe a parking brake is pointless or not, it's a required feature. The NHTSA opined in the link below that a parking pawl does not meet the requirement of having a solely mechanical means that provides friction to prevent movement from a stationary position. https://www.nhtsa.gov/interpretations/aiam4640

If you are old enough, you may recall the Ford vehicles where the parking pawls were disengaging and rolling away. My brother owned one. It was common and real. He carried a wheel chock around and used it.

If my Jeep doesn't rest still in neutral, I pull the ebrake lever enough to hold it firmly on its own. I then let off the service brake to let it settle before shifting to park. The byproduct of always doing this is zero clunk when I shift back to drive.

I did a search and could not find anything really newer than this thread, so I'll bring this one back to life...
Adding on to this...when you look under the console and if the metal bracket holding the brake cables is at a 45-degree angle or so, it's very likely the connection came undone at one of the rear wheels, slide underneath the rear and look towards the front on each backing plate for a cable with a hook on the end, if it's not connected... BINGO!

I am really surprised no one mentioned adjust the brake on the drums.. I tried both wyas. I like this method a bit better. I give it a couple of turns every time I do tire rotation.
