I have noticed a few Wranglers driving around with the back cargo window open (up). Is it ok to do that? And is it just for ventilation?

Bad idea. Every bump in the road will cause the gas filled lift cylinders to wear out just a wee bit quicker.

Look closer and see if there is a 2x4 hanging out on the side of the spare tire.

I've only done it on very short trips back from Home Depot when the wife has the F-150 somewhere. I wouldn't want to do it any longer than necessary.

I have done it too hauling lumber. I wouldn't do it just for ventilation.

I used to run with window up on my JK all the time. I do occasionally with my JL. Never had any issues. And yes, it helps with wind buffeting quite a bit. If you look around you are going to see most people say don't do it, but you will find next to nothing supporting why it is a bad idea. Besides a window strut wearing out. Which is also not likely to happen and they can be replaced for $20-$30 for both. It's fine to do it if you want to.

I run mine up all the time mostly because I have the SOT. I don’t go above 55 just around town. Zero issues so far.

When you hit a bump in the road, etc., the window lift struts tweak... which can cause the rear window itself to tweak (and it can/will do so easily) and the rear glass to be stressed / and possibly shatter.

Sure, you may drive with the rear window up plenty of times and then..... then, have the rear window tweak/break and well, cost you a lot of money to repair.. It is just not worth the chance.

I shake my head and mumble to myself...... "not smart", every time I see anyone driving any brand/model vehicle with the rear hatch/window up - supported with just the struts.

Unsure of how true it is but page 56 of the manual says something along the lines of poisonous exhaust gasses being sucked in and "injuring" everyone in the Jeep ?‍♂

Totally agree with Rhinebeck01, Jeep doesn’t use a frame around the glass, struts fastened directly to the window. Very little give to those struts.

Around here, hit a pothole at the right speed and I could see that thing shattering. Better option, take the roof off.

I've done it twice for fun. I won't do it again. Even small bumps, and dips in the road, will send the rear glass slamming against the spare tire brake light. Not worth the damage to the rear window defogger grid, struts, hinges, or window.
For hauling lumber and long items, i just use my truck.

Good as place as any... Often wondered, is there an aftermarket company that has crafted some sort of a quick release device so you can remove the rear window quickly and safely? I've often thought it would be a hot ticket item if available. Personally I would love the option to leave the hardtop on, but take the rear glass and doors off. Am I giving away the million dollar idea here?!

Edit: NOT a quick relase screwdriver or socket set. :CWL:

Your jeep, do what you want with it. If there are consequences, you face them. I'll wait to hear from someone that's broken the window just by driving with it open...
