We only know what the article states. For all we know the guy has a satellite phone, and could be paying for the S&R each time and maybe has deep pockets and just loves being the center of attention and S&R helicopter rides. When has the press gotten the details right?
I know after the first time, they would rescue my wife walking in one direction and years later find my body buried in the opposite direction.

Maybe time to re-think your savings beneficiary? But then, it would be cool to have a TV show about yourself. Even if it's on the murder channel.

One more thing I thought of....................

The article does say that HE was rescued for the 4th time. It doesn't say that the other person was rescued for the 4th time. Maybe he was showing a 4th person something different.............

There are 3 reasons that this is the 4th time this has happened to the same person.

1. He is an idiot.
2. There has been none, zero, consequences for his idiotic decisions.
3. He has not been held financially responsible for the 2nd rescue, 3rd rescue and probably not the 4th.

Probably never going to fix the first problem I listed, but at least 2 and 3 can be brought to his attention.
I agree 100%.

I think the first rescue should always be free, second rescue maybe they have to pay 50%, after that you're 100% liable for all future rescues.

To be fair, they probably never really had to think about such a thing before since there was never anyone dumb enough to need more than 2 rescues before until now.

There, I fixed it.

Mine would probably let me live the first time, though I'd hear about it every time the wheels touched dirt thereafter. I would definitely not make it out unscathed a second time, and there wouldn't be a 3rd.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
I have rescued some along our way. Just recently, I was at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes and had a couple young guys ask me if I could rescue a Jeep stuck in a waterhole. My group was one of the very few vehicles on the dunes that Monday. If we would not have been there, these girls would have run into a decent size recovery bill.

The water was up to the top of their seats.

People do dumb stuff. We are all probably guilty of it. Carla and I often wheel alone and are often many miles from a real road. It is important to make quality risk assessments while traveling off the beating path. With this being his fourth rescue, it is obvious that he does NOT make accurate risk assessments.

Thank God we have access to Search and Rescue. The rescue of the people often falls on to the tax payer as it should, but the rescue of the vehicle usually does not. Off Road recovery are expensive and usually not covered by insurance. Road Side Assistance means being on the side of the road........

You can’t fix stupid. I do disagree with the general statement of never travel alone part, it boils down to risk tolerance. Ensure you have recovery and survival gear, and don’t be dumb, know your limits etc.

having said that, this dude definitely shouldn’t leave the parking lot of the mall.
I agree.

We cruise solo around the Mojave all the time to visit old mining diggings, springs and other non-commercialized points of interest. If you don’t do stupid things, you don’t wind up in stupid situations. Obviously, pack for the trip, ensure your mule is trail ready and don’t drive in to what you can’t walk out.

We can’t all aspire to greatness. Maybe with his skill set (or lack there of) this is his personal Mount Everest, and he won’t let failed attempts stop him. I tried looking up YouTube videos of “The Narrows” near Bullhead City. It looks like a sandy wash with high and very tight canyon walls. Maybe the OP can tell us.

Where exactly is this location “the narrows”? Asking for a friend… 😉
I'd like to know as well as apparently there are women just wondering around waiting to be rescued. May be the perfect trail for a fathers day run.
