I think with heavy stop and go traffic (Highway lane closure, Etc.) its best to just hit the disable button. Pretty much any other time I let it operate.
Same problem here. If when I park and think about it: pull in slower, don't press hard on the brake. How often ... not very... Sometimes it does it and sometimes not. They should program it never to start in park unless the ignition button is pushed. Generally I am tolerant of ESS and try to not think about it so much, but this parking thing you describe is really annoying.
Best way to deal with that is to pop the transmission into neutral as you are stopping, then put into park as you are fully stopped. it avoids the unnecessary ESS shutdown and restart.
Or press the disable button just before or as your pulling into a parking spot.
That'll work too.

What do you have your Temp set for on auto climate control? Must be frigid because I keep mine on 75 and ESS works just fine once the Cabin has cooled down.ESS / Auto Start Stop. it was a feature I was dreading. It was a feature that annoyed the hell out of me in the beginning. So of course i chose to shut if off using the button. Then after a few long trips and 14 and 15 mpg. I thought I would test it out and see if it would help out. Sure enough it did. Those 14 and 15 mpg trips quickly moved to 16.5 and 17.5 mpg trips. Now, I am disappointed when it doesn't engage. Little did I know that if you have Auto Climate Control on it disables the ESS. So now i try never to use Auto Climate and the ESS engages more frequently. Yay.....even better high way milage.....getting about 18.5 to 20 on long trips. So...ya....happy with it
ah, Is that temp difference actually programmed in to the ESS that you know of? Its been mid 90s here as well this past summer and I haven't has any real issues with it operating once the A/C cooled the cabin down.
If it's my guess, I don't think it would be a specific temperature. The auto temp is designed for you to set the temperature to what you want it to be then the A/C or Heat blows colder or warmer in an attempt to hit that temperature. So somewhere there is a thermostat reading the cabin temperature and adjusting the AC or Heat to meet the temperature you have it set for. If you have the temp set at 72 and the cabin is 82 then the AC will be working really hard to reach that temp thus disabling the ESS to help reach or maintain temp. Im not sure what the variable would be for the auto temp to kick on the AC or Heat but it would be much like a home thermostat. I'm just guessing so if someone knows for sure, please correct me.
