Been driving mine for a week now, never had a ess vehicle before so decided to no turn it off and see how I like it with the 6 speed. And for the most part I don't mind it, when you come to a full stop it is nice knowing that I'm not burning gas unnecessarily, and when I go to start by the time I'm in gear the Jeep had started and it's ready for me to press the gas.

Now that being said it isn't perfect the two occasions that I turn it off are when I'm doing something like a three point or parallel parking, or if I'm in very slow moving but still rolling traffic i.e <10 mph especially if there is merging traffic. The biggest annoyance with that is it will shut off while I'm still rolling around 2 mph but a blip with the clutch will wake it up

To answer one of your questions: when off-roading you’ll be in 4Lo most of the time and per the user manual ESS does not engage in 4Lo (thank god). They do note however that they recommend turning it off during off-road use.

Other reasons ESS will be off without having to hit the button:
• Driver’s seat belt is not buckled.
• Outside temperature is less than 10°F (–12°C) or greater than 109°F (43°C).
• Actual cabin temperature is significantly different than temperature set on Auto HVAC.
• HVAC is set to full defrost mode.
• Engine has not reached normal operating temperature.
• Battery discharged.
• When driving in REVERSE.
• Hood is open.
• Transfer case is in 4LO or Neutral
• Driver’s seat is not occupied or driver door is open.
• Vehicle is at high altitude.
• The vehicle is on a steep grade.
• Forward Gear is engaged.
• System fault is present.
• Low fuel is detected.
• HVAC set to MAX A/C.

I am skeptical, just ordered my JLUR with a 6 speed, but it does look like they put in place some exceptions that make sense.
Thanks for clarifying for me ! and that doesn't sound bad maybe I just won't buckle my seatbelt and don't have to worry about the auto start/stop feature then lol ^_^

I absolutely love it! Stop start at every light, saves gas, helps fuel economy, wonderful invention and perfect for people who drive gas guzzling vehicles like jeeps! As jeep enthusiasts we are the optimal audience for wanting to be "greener"! I love sitting in the florida heat and having my engine go off, on, off, on at every freakin stop light! Its my life's dream to drive my off road vehicle and save a drop of gas while putting more strain on my engine bc lets face it, theres a stop light every 50 feet! BUT the BEST consequence of the stop start feature is..... ONE MORE THING I GET TO TINKER WITH ON MY JEEP SO THAT IT IS PERMANENTLY DISENGAGED! Because as a cult jeep follower, if I wanted to go green I would buy a tesla (which I have looked into bc they are cool, but could never replace a jeep)...or prius. I love experiencing the outdoors but corporate Jeep, obviously and hopefully you had to add this feature to meet guidelines, but dang. START STOP AINT EVER GONNA BE A JEEP THING.
(and hitting that button is annoying, bc I'm that petty, but mostly spoiled).
I like my jeep perfect for me, which is why we all customize our jeeps to our taste and our jeeps personality, and this lil button embarresses my jeep! Or atleast I know it will.... when my Blue Marlin finally arrives!

The first couple times I drove our red JLUR, the ESS definitely made my heart jump... whoa, what's wrong??? Then a split-second later you remember its supposed to do that. Now it doesn't bother me and am even starting to think it's kind of cool.

The most annoying thing is how it starts the engine back up when you go from "Drive" to "Park" at the end of your trip. Pull into garage, engine stops while still in drive, shift to park, engine starts back up just so that I can turn it off

The ess system can't see the future. It doesn't know if you plan to stop and then drive away or if you're done driving. In my Highlander I just don't press the brake hard and the engine will keep running before I shut the car down. I assume the Jeep will work the same.

People's irrational dislike of the ess is pretty funny. It literally will not effect negatively in any way. Just a bunch of salty people here.

It doesn't have to see the future... it just has to be coded so that it doesn't fire back up when you shift back into Park. Ultimately I don't mind it much, but agree with most that it should be something with a master on/off switch within the electronics settings. And think that this "Park" issue should be changed

Salty or not, it's ridiculous that the motor restarts when your foot is still on the brake.

I can see how it might be a pain if you have an automatic, though I actually like it with my manual transmission. It appears to only shut off the engine when the clutch is engaged, you are in neutral and your foot is on the brake. This usually only happens if I'm at a stop for a period of time.

I agree about that but like I said just don't push the brake all the way down and it won't happen. I don't like aspect either.

I'm more worried that when my manual Rubicon comes in I'll think it stalled every time ess kicks in. That'll take some getting used to.

That's good to know. Makes me a little less nervous about it on a manual.

After having start stop in my '16 F-150 for the past 2 years, my only gripe was my habit of turning the wheel before i would begin to lift off the brake. Engine off, no power assist... not a big deal, just adjusted how I make left turns at intersections.

Sounds like it might not engage the way I drive; when I come to a stop I leave the clutch pedal depressed and shift into first.
Sitting still for long periods of time with the clutch depressed has negative affects on your release bearing.
