So I’ve been looking at bumpers and for some reason I’m stuck on the Barnes 4WD DiY Pritchett Canyon Bumpers. But I don’t have a welder let alone one that’ll do 1/2” material. But the only part of the bumpers that require the 1/2” are the D-Ring tabs. I work for a company that sells welding equipment and gases so I can get a great deal on welders. But I’m wondering if I can get a 3-N-1 that’ll do mig rig and stick and just stick weld the D-Ring tabs with some 7018 and mig the rest of the 1/4” material? Barnes 4wd was no help. I asked that if they recommend a welder that can weld this bumper and they said they spoke to their engineering team and they had no recommendations. I’m like really none? What machine do you guys use. They said sorry we have no recommendations. That seems crazy to me. So if anyone has recommendations or suggestions on a welder that would be cool!

I’m a hobbyist welder so not very experienced. I have read a lot on welding forums and watched YouTube videos. You likely can’t go wrong with Miller, Lincoln and Hobart. Harbor Freight has cheaper welders that will get the job done but have a lower duty cycle.

If you preheat the thick metal you can get by with a smaller welder. The d-ring mounts are a relatively small piece to heat up. I used a 185 Lincoln MIG to make my bumpers.
