So I bought one a couple days ago, but I don’t think im ready to cut the frame ends just yet. Im not sure what direction im going with the JL. But I’ll take some measurements and fab up my own stubby which I’ll make capable of housing fog lights inside since I don’t plan on a winch either. I’m mocking it up with 1/8” then I can either cut it from 3/16 or 1/4” plate. I don’t have a bender wide enough so I’ll just make puzzle pieces weld then grind.

Front face is done. I think it’s the hardest part getting the holes to match up. Slightly off but I’ll fix it in the final I guess. And these are all temporary hardware too.

This will be the top plate. Figured I’d put some kind of curve into it. Added holes for aftermarket fog lights.

Mind sharing the measurements? This would save people some time if they decide to do same.
When it’s done and if it turns out the way I imagine it. I could also push out and leave room for a separate winch plate, but save that idea for another time after this is done.

Just ask @cosine he knows!
Might look into a shop w/ a steel brake, much cleaner for bends vs. a weld/grind. Look forward to the finished project, nice!
I have a shop nearby w/ a brake and made my DIY skid plate setup much easier (and better & stronger finished product).

Yeah it would look “professional” but if I’m paying someone to do work for me I’d just buy another bumper too. But for strength I will be adding gussets, could do 1/4” too. I’ve built a hitch from scratch and added numerous gussets to all connections, and he’s pulled some stuff twisting and pulling without any issues. It’s all about triangles and distribution.

Got it, I love to weld and sky's the limit to what you can do. Luckily the brake I used came at a great deal, got all these plates "braked" for $80 :) Again, look forward to your finished bumper, should be a nice upgrade for sure!

I went a little off the rails with mine, but I did a shell using laminated 1/8" plate and angle iron to sort of mimic the press break style the manufactured bumpers have. Its a bumper shell around a modified JCR winch plate meant for the stock steel bumpers.

Some crappy detail pictures are in my build thread if you want more.

Was this an episode of Dirt Everyday? I know Dave on that show made a bumper or 2 for all manner of trucks and Jeeps. Speaking of which they need to make some more episodes of that.

Getting some shape. Yeah it square ?, but it’s not a freaking trapezoid big eared bumper either. I shall continue on. Making it work with the factory steel skid I swapped over from the Mojave. Just need to add lower portions then I’ll tack it up more and spray it black to get the overall look before fully welding and smoothen edges. Lmk what you all think. I’m really happy with the curve on top plate.
