Well, people keep opening their car doors and hitting my painted fenders. So I'm all for there being an unpainted edge to take the damage while I'm at the mall.

It's about function, not form!

The irony being that having painted fenders at all is form over function.

If you off-road at all, the amount of body colour plastic that chips/scrapes-off the rear fenders would keep most people from every getting them again, it’s tempting me to complete the colour to black transform of my fenders on the rear.

Problem with steel fenders is that every Jeep prior to the JK had their fenders rot out along the seam between the body and the point where the fender attached to the body. At least up here where we have salt on our roads....

Personally I would prefer plastic fenders for dent and rust protection, in terms of the paint flaking off, wonder if injecting colour into the part in the molding process would be more resilient though perhaps they canned that idea if they found they couldn't match the colours exactly.

Thinking now about grabbing some of that clear paint protector film for my rear flares on my new JK. Lame but easy.

That’s exactly it, injection is more permanent but colour match is much harder, and has already caused delays in past colour launces using the easier overlay method, so injection would just increase the odds unfortunately.

Yeah, and it works well there and on the door hinges of the Unlimited, and even on the leading edge of the hood, and the plastic covered grill itself too.

Although it still takes a heavy beating, and unfortunately doesn’t do much against rock scrapes or broken tree branches (what gouged the fender above), but it will offer much more protection against gravel and such.

Just be sure to check and reapply, as it will wear down over time, as some people have found out the hard way.

Some colors would probably be able to be matched with plastic (black/white/silver), other colors especially metallics likely wouldn't be able to be matched

I have the same issue. However I will probably just put that clean chip guard on them as soon as I get the new ride.

Yeah, I should’ve but was always thinking I was going to replace the rears after I replaced the fronts in the first 1,000KMs due to an accident (when my sister borrowed it while I was on a business trip).

However, I don’t know if the chip guard would stopped that tree branch from gouging it, but it definitely would’ve prevented the surrounding chips and pits all over it.

That chip guard stuff is pretty thick. I had is on the front end of my old Mitisubishi Evo IX and it prevented the front end of that car from getting destroyed on track days. Only issue is that with heavy use it gets pitted looking its self, and at that time it was almost the same cost to replace the chip guard as it was to repaint the entire front bumper. .... I have heard though that the cost has dropped.

I must be a bit goofy, but I like the dings / dents / chips in my wrangler that have come from off-roading and beating on it a bit. Shows it has been battle tested and has seen more than just an asphalt road. I almost see them as a badge of honor.

I feel like a sizable number of off road enthusiasts share this exact opinion. Scars on a wrangler appeal same as wearing mud on one. Not my thing, but I fully understand the appeal, as the Wrangler is a ruggedly handsome truck.

Me? I just think black chips in white paint might possibly look fly/on-purpose, like Cookies and cream midsoles:

Yet no doubt I will still wrap the bumpers and fenders in all white Carrara marble or possibly said white/black speckle 101Dalmatians steez. but classy-ish. And a large portion of y'all will cringe even harder upon seeing the body color mud guards behind every 33" street truck tire lol
