Greetings,

I haven’t found much in searching the forums here on dashcams. Does anyone have any experience with what they think is the best dashcam?…ideally one that might offer some security features for unattended vehicles?

this company seems to be at the top of my list right now, but would love to hear opinions from others

https://www.viofo.com/

thank you all

Does it do something more than just record it when it detects something going on? That'd be pointless when the camera get taken with the Jeep.

I've read good reviews here of @WOLFBOX CAR LIFE's stuff (one of our sponsors). I'm not sure if they have monitoring systems like that though.

I'm a big fan of Garmin. The interface and mobile app are excellent. We have an older model, the 67W, which is a 1440p resolution and 140 view angle. It has Parking Guard which stays alert when the vehicle is stationary, and they offer a constant power cable for the unit which you can wire in.

I know several on here have installed blackvue & run them. Can do front and/or back camera depending which version and can hardwire to jeep.

I run a $67 RedTiger F9. I've never had a problem with it. It reads plates just fine while parked and if someone hits me while driving I would just read the plate number out loud and the RedTiger will record it. But yes, if you want top of the line I would look at Sony Starvis 2 equipped cameras. Pro tip (even though I'm not a pro and don't play one on TV): turn off CarPlay or Android on your phone before trying to connect to your dash cam. The dash cam wifi for set-up and download will disconnect when they are active.

This is pretty subjective. Really depends on why you want one. I have the VIFO A199 Mini 2 and I installed it for the sole purpose of capturing a road rage instance if and when it occurred. I used to live in the SF Bay Area and over the years this became an increased concern on the Freeways. Not really worried about a parking mode, damage or theft of the Jeep. I have insurance

I have a dual BlackVue camera with cloud. Hardware is very solid but I do have a few things to mention if you go this route.

* If you pick a cellular one like I did good luck getting it on AT&T. Ended up going T-Mobile with automatic bill pay for $7 a month after several failed attempts to get it on my AT&T plan

* Love the hardware but the software is a little buggy and aged

* Buy a battery pack module or else you will have to get used to "Auxiliary switches unavailable until battery is charged" message every startup. The battery option I picked they no longer sell and I still used to get the message. Hmmm maybe that is why they do not offer it anymore. LoL ( Pending on settings and use it can be a parasitic battery drain )

I agree with the sentiments mentioned in post #6.

To that end, I use a GoPro Hero set to record in 20 minute loops, to a MicroSD card, at 1080p. Done.

I have the Viofo A-129 installed for about three years and like it a lot. I don't get the power messages that HempelNet mentioned, but do have the power pack installed. I've had only one issue and Viofo took care of it quickly with no hassle. One thing to watch out for is that if you do any hard wheeling the camera will beep and start recording every time you take a hard bounce off a rock, thinking it detected an accident. I would guess that happens with any brand though.

I have been using the Viofo A139 pro 3ch for a few years now and find its the best for my needs... also have 2 battery paks with it so it can record while parked for an additional 48 hours
(powercell 8 dash cam batt pack)
.... Viofo uses the latest Starvis 2 sensors for real 4k resolution (can actually read the license plates on moving vehicles if needed)

I just installed a Wolfbox G850 in my kids 2009 F150 and it seems to be really nice. It records while driving, and also has collision and security warnings, along with GPS monitoring.

What I liked about the Wolfbox is that it replaced the rear view mirror with a screen, so you can see what is being recorded as it records. It also has a SD card to record, and can be connected to your phone to download if the need presents itself.

I have read a few comments that the mirror interferes with the sun visors on a Jeep though, but I can comment on that as I don't have one installed in the Jeep yet.

I ordered a second rear view camera that I will be installing on our TT, so when I'm towing I can see what behind me.

I’ve been using “Owlcam” in all my vehicles for about 6 years and I love them! However… I received an email from Owlcam last week saying that as of May 30, 2025 they will no longer be in service. 😢 Needless to say, I’m super bummed! Now I have to try and find another really dependable security / dash cam that will work 24/7 and be able to handle the extreme heat in Arizona. Dang, I wish Owlcam would stay active!

I really wish that Jeep would make the front and rear cameras work as security / dash cameras like the cameras in Tesla vehicles.
