I remember the agent asked me if the plywood was in the air when it hit my car or if it was on the ground. I replied that it was obviously in the air because it would not have damaged the grill area of my car if it was laying on the ground. I then asked him if the car ahead of me could have been liable for the damage and he said yes. Since I did not get the license # and I did not have a recording of the incident as it happened I just had to pay my deductible and get it fixed.
Also I’ve never ended up actually installing a dash cam on anything. Maybe I should as drivers are completely nuts these days. Irrespective if they’re hitting debris on the road or not.

The cops usually don't get involved in a civil issue like road debris kicked up by one car hitting another...until someone start swinging at another person.:)

Oh, really? So, if someone leaned out of their passing car window, threw a rock against your Jeep which caused a dent and you had it all on video you think the police would just laugh it off? I don't think so.
What you described here is assault.

Damage from road debris is covered under comprehensive. The only instance you can bill another drivers insurance is if debris came directly from that vehicle making them responsible for it. For example, if a rock truck doesnt properly secure their load with nets etc, you can file a claim against them.

OK, I understand that point. However, what if said truck is missing one of its required mud flaps, which results in it flinging up a piece of gravel off the road into your windshield, which would not have happened otherwise? Same question for a modified Jeep with oversize tires that stick out beyond the wheel wells.

Depends on what the state law is regarding mud flaps. Many states require them for semis so if one was missing, it would be a DOT violation and you could file against their insurance, if of course you can prove where the rock came from and it was the tire missing the mud flap.

As far as tires sticking out on say a Jeep? Depends on the state law. If a vehicle violates a state requirement such as fenders and it results in a tire throwing a rock, then sure you can file a claim. Again, you would have to prove the rock came from that vehicle and this violation directly caused the rock to hit your car.

However if a car or truck, that has all parts required to be road legal, throws a rock and hits your car, you file against your comprehensive coverage. They are not responsible at that point.

I've had a 2018 JL 4 dr. Rubicon for the last 9 months. Over the last two months I've developed a front windshield crack starting at the bottom center, climbing up vertically about 2 inches, then horizontally (towards the passenger side) about 7 inches. Replaced the window one month ago, and today discovered a sudden near identical location crack on my new window. Doubt it's caused by a rock since the crack location and shape is identical to the first crack. Could it be related to defrost vent location?

Windshield #3 was installed today. Combined with two previous repairs, I'm becoming good friends with the local Safelite.

2018 JL with 40k+ miles, still on stock windshield. I practice keeping a safe following distance as my only precaution against windscreen damage.

Just want to asked if anyone has experienced this when they replaced your windshield and if they left the seal the way they left mine.
Here we go:
Got my windshield replaced and the guys at Safelite scratched the paint and didnt say anything (1st and 2nd picture). I told them my car had no scratched and you could literally see how they tried to “cover” it w/ some kind of clear paint?
They said they couldn’t buffer it so they were going to send my car to a body shop to get it fixed.
The body shop fixed the scratches but then i noticed the seal was different from last time (3rd picture) and i could hear a noise whenever i drove over a bumpy road; the kind of noise when something is rubbing against something.
Anywho..im supposed to call these guys tomorrow.
How does your seal looked after the replacement? Maybe im hearing the noise because of the way they put mine??

I got windshield coverage built into my extended warranty from the dealer. So, I'm feeling better about this eventuality. With the Renegade I had previously, the OEM windshield had to be replaced within a week of driving it home, and the Safelite windshield that replaced it was cracked when I traded it in...

I've had smaller chips repaired twice already, but joined the ranks of new windshield club this morning. Setup the replacement through my insurance/Safelite with a $50 glass deductible.. The original work order had an aftermarket window but a quick phone call to Safelite and they switched it out to OEM and they instantly received insurance approval to replace with OEM.
