Does anyone know of a driver-side version of the cold-air intake vent that exists for the 3.6/2.0 crowd? I was looking at one the other day and I can't understand why it's so hard to adapt - it looks like the braketry on the inside to cover the hole you have to cut is the only part that has to be mirrored for the curvature of the left-hand side...

Looking online at a few pictures, it appears so.

AFE makes a less restrictive intake, but I am specifically referring to this: (Example from @JPAloha 's build thread, but there are other examples)

Damn, if the intake is that low, I understand why people get snorkles now...

I wish Rugged Ridge made this one for the Ecodiesel's so I wouldn't have to cut a hole in the hood.

I have another vent piece on the way, my plan is to see if it can fit on the other side of the hood. It’s going to take a while to arrive from HI but I’ll post any updates in my build thread.

correct; didn’t J**p make a version of that for the Diesel?

thanks for trying!

@driventoadventure
sorry Lrr; looks like you’re stuck with aftermarket if you choose to do this.
i am curious though; what is the problem you’re looking for this to solve?

Problem? None specifically, just trying to get cooler and fresher air into the engine. I am totally fine cutting a hole in the hood to do so. Maybe this will convince me to spend the effort fixing my 3D printer to make one. Maybe I will just leave it be. It's just some low-hanging fruit on the list of things I want to do to my Jeep.

but all this would do is get air from the same place it’s already getting if from (through the gap between the hood and the fender), so i don’t see it could be any “cooler/fresher”.
seems the increased risk of water ingestion would outweigh any alleged benefit.

now if you’re talking Snorkel, where the intake is higher, that would be another story.
one if the many aftermarket hoods might even fall in-between in terms of risk/benefit.

Maybe I am missing something, but there's not much of a gap on my hood. The way the airbox seals to the hood, I only see it as getting a very restricted air path, some of which may come from between the insulation pad and hood. Where this concern partly came from is the assumption that some comes from the cavity formed there. Now that I have opened the vents and the engine can exhaust some of its hot air through them, that cavity has engine-bay-temp air.

As someone who has tried CAIs twice (911/M5), my opinion is there are two things to be gained, and only two. Cosmetics and intake honk. No cooler air, no mpg improvement and no power increase. Actually, I have the exact same lists for catback exhausts - except I'd substitute exhaust note for intake honk. . So if you are looking for bling or sound go for it, otherwise...

If the configuration allowed a true ram-air effect, which a side vent does not, there might be a touch of improvement.

For your EcoDiesel, a Banks Derringer is the real deal - big power improvement. Both on the stopwatch and seat-of-the-pants. Too bad they can be warranty killers.

Do you have a PedalMonster? Best warranty-friendly performance enhancer, and the irony is that it doesn't actually improve performance, but you'll think it did. And...that's what counts.

For Engine tune, I'll go Green Diesel and eventually I might get the Pedal Monster, but for me it's more about temperature management and reducing restrictions anywhere possible. My concern with restriction is that my Jeep seems to have a really good seal around the intake (see below pictures showing excellent contact between the intake seal and my hood). With how close the clearance is between my hood and body, there doesn't seem to be very much area for the engine to get ANY airflow, let alone hot/"dirty" air from the engine bay. A vent like the one which exists already for the 3.6L crowd would just be a quick way to guarantee basically no restriction. Maybe it's supposed to have more hood gap? I noticed when I was cutting my vents (again for temperature management) that the Driver's side vent is actually pushing down on the intake piping from the airbox... Maybe that's not normal and I need to figure a way to adjust my hood spacing?

I am certainly a form over function type when it comes to looks and "bling" (for looks I mainly care about it being done "cleanly" and looking "professional") and I know I will never get big turbo sound plus that can grab attention and be obnoxious, which are the opposite of my usual MO.

Looking more closely at the cowling etc around the air box, maybe I am missing something, or maybe the vent holes on the CavFab fender liners I plan to get will be enough to get more airflow to the box...
