I've been dealing with this noise for a long time. This clunking sound occurs at low speeds and with quick on/off throttle inputs. The video is from under the Jeep. It starts at the transfer case and then down to the rear axle.

Is this normal?

Saw a vid where the rear drive shaft was bumping into gas tank skid with lifted JL's. Remedy was loosen all tank skid bolts, put a ratchet strap around it and pull it over slightly and re tighten skid bolts.

In this case, the gas tank is free and clear.

It drives fine as long as the the drive shaft and the rear diff are in sync, if that makes sense. The clunk only happens when there is an abrupt change in speed from the transmission to the shaft and down to the diff. Example would be if I accelerate hard and then let off the gas or when I modulate the throttle at lower speeds in stop and go traffic.

A good analogy would be a line of train cars moving from a stop and the couplings clunk from car to car as the slack is taken way.

I have the same noise when im decelerating with no throttle at low speeds. I thought it was coming from my right front wheel but that video sounds identical. Is this normal?

looks like normal driveline lash... grab any vehicle with a driveshaft and it does the same thing... there's several areas in the t'case and rear end that have small clearances built in to function properly... when all that play stacks up throughout the driveline you get some free movement before it's made up via acceleration or deceleration of the parts in question... when you stab the gas quick while coasting, it'll make noise...

I may run up to the shop today and crawl under mine and see what it does... I'd think with that much lash it'd howl in either coast or drive...

Hey turnkey and HiJinx69,

If this noise continues to be an issue, I'd recommend having your dealership take a look, and I would perform a drive with service staff to demonstrate the noise if possible. If you have further questions or need assistance working with the dealer, PM us any time.

I went to the dealership today. Explained the issue. They did my oil change and software update. Could not get me in for an appointment until Jan 23rd

From my general observation about this noise is, that it is only in Sahara's and Sports. I don't think a Rubicon owner has related to this issue. I could be wrong.
